Characteristics

Location

We will take the N-420 road to the exit for Falset. Before entering the village, at the first roundabout we will take the turn-off, as if we wanted to join the N-420 road again in the opposite direction. A few metres further on a turn-off appears on the right; it is the track that will take us to the Sant Gregori recreation area, and a little further up we will find the rock shelter and hermitage.

Description

Morphology

The Sant Gregori rock shelter has maximum dimensions of 44 metres in length by 9.5 in depth and a height of 10 metres.

Other details

A rock-cut construction built in a wide rock shelter, it consists of the hermit's house, with two doors, and the hermitage itself, built of red sandstone masonry with reinforcing ashlars at the corners.

History

Known since time immemorial. It seems that the hermitage was built towards the end of the 16th century.

Despite its nil speleological interest it is cited by Faura i Sans (Recull, 1909) and by J. Ferraté (Espeleologia de les comarques tarragonines, 1918).

It should not be confused with the rock shelter located beneath the hermitage, Abric de Sant Gregori, which Salvador Vilaseca excavated at the beginning of the 1930's and where an important flint workshop was found.
