Description
Morphology
The entrance is about 2 metres long by an average width of 80 cm. It gives access to a 5.5 m drop that lands on the upper part of a debris cone that slopes down on both sides. On the south side the slope ends quickly; on the north side it is somewhat longer, and at its lower part the cavity continues through a very narrow passage. Just below the passage is the terminal small shaft (in fact, a narrow fissure) where the maximum depth is reached, -11 m measured from the upper entrance (-9 m from the lower entrance).
Progression
The narrow passage is very selective; you have to be very thin to get through it. Once past the constriction, progression is more comfortable and you find yourself in the shaft that forms the upper entrance. This entrance, despite having been enlarged by l'Efrén, is very narrow. In fact, we believe it is impassable except, perhaps, for an extraordinarily thin person with contortionist skills.
History
On 8 August 1908 the French naturalist and pharmacist M. Jacques Maheu, his wife Léontine and a nephew of his, M. Miquel, arrived in Barcelona. On the 11th, from the monastery, they went up to the capella de Sant Joan accompanied by Marià Faura and P. Marcet, an old acquaintance of Maheu. They went to a small pit near the chapel (probably already known to P. Marcet, a monk of Montserrat) which they thought (it seems correctly) was the cavity cited by P. Gerard Joana in his 1801 manuscript, which he placed 185 steps from the ermita de Santa Caterina. Faura catalogued it in his Recull as Avenc de Sant Joan and gave it a depth of 10 m. The Maheus and their nephew collected cryptogams, insects and molluscs.
More than 100 years passed and this datum of Faura's was carried along in all the catalogues and lists of Montserrat cavities without adding anything new on the matter.
It was not until February 2020 that l'Efrén, warden of the refugi-ermita de Sant Benet, located it and, together with Eliseo López, explored it and posted a video on Youtube.
On 2 September 2023, Ferran Cardona (ECMB) and Josep Cuenca (GEB) located it, explored it and carried out a complete cataloguing work, naming it very aptly Pouetó de Sant Joan, knowing that it was undoubtedly the Avenc de Sant Joan of Faura.
Note from Espeleoindex: In 1978, the colleague Joan Borràs made a compilation of the activities of the GES – CMB during its first 30 years of existence (1948-1978), making an abstract of the Group's activity book. This typewritten work was never published but different photocopies were made and distributed among friends and acquaintances.
In this list of activities it is recorded that in March 1976 members of the GES explored the Pou de Sant Joan as part of the work for the third volume of the Catálogo espeleológico de la provincia de Barcelona, which was to include the Serra de l'Obac and Montserrat. Since this volume never saw the light of day, we do not know which cavity they were referring to. From some comments made almost 50 years ago, it seems that because the explorers of the Avenc de Sant Joan of 1908 (Faura, Maheu,...) had gone two days later to the Pou de Costa Dreta, they had referred to the small pit at the start of the path, known for many years as Avenc de les Bateries, which incidentally does not appear at any point in the GES activity book.
