Description

Morphology

Rock shelter 19 m wide by 8 m maximum depth located at the foot of a not very high rock wall. It is currently very hidden since the vegetation conceals its mouth, which gives it a shady and wild appearance.

Other details

Its interior houses the remains of the hermitage dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Currently only one dwelling is preserved, but until not many years ago there was still another at the opposite end of the rock shelter. Both dwellings and the rock shelter have given shelter, peace and solitude to people who practiced the eremitic life – many of them women – even in very recent times.

History

According to the Patronat de la Muntanya de Montserrat, the hermitage of Santa Caterina was built in the 17th century next to the ruins of the old hermitage of Sant Pere, which was demolished in the year 1677. But the abbot Pedro de Burgos (1463-1536), who was abbot of Montserrat between 1512-1536, already mentions the hermitage of Santa Caterina in writings, locating it under a rock, (not to be confused with Pedro de Burgos y Valle 1629-1633). The place was known as l'ocellera de Montserrat due to the large number of birds that were in this spot. We also have the unpublished work of father Miquel Solsona, who was a Benedictine monk between 1585-1618; he mentions that the ruined hermitage of Sant Pere is within a crossbow shot of the hermitage of Santa Caterina.
