Montmell, El • Baix Penedès6m1m

A group of small hollows near the castle of Montmell, with the entrances named Boca Calenta no. 1, no. 2 and no. 3.

Characteristics

Location

From Juncosa del Montmell you must take the track that leaves the village and leads to the Montmell forest recreation area. Here we will leave the car and continue along the path to the new Church of Sant Miquel, consecrated in 1598. We will continue the route along a steeper path until we reach the old hermitage of Sant Miquel, which dates from the 12th century. We will continue to the col and here we will find a sign indicating to the right the path towards the Creu del Cap de la Serra and the path towards the castle on the left. We will continue in the direction of the castle and very close to the path we will soon find the first cavity, no. 1.

A little above Boca Calenta no. 1 and about 4 metres away is no. 2 and a little above that is Boca Calenta no. 3.

Description

Morphology

Boca Calenta no. 1: A short gallery of 4 metres on a gentle slope ends in a narrow passage through which the air current comes out. It communicates with the entrance of no. 2 through a passage impassable due to the accumulation of blocks.

Boca Calenta no. 2: A short gallery of 4 metres ends in a narrow passage through which the air current comes out. It communicates with the entrance of no. 1 through a passage impassable due to the accumulation of blocks.

Boca Calenta no. 3: It has an entrance covered in moss that gives way to a slope of 6 metres that ends in an impassable narrowness from which the air current comes out. Above there is a very narrow and totally impassable opening, but which lets in a little light.

History

Font i Sagué cites them for the first time in his catalogue (1897), thanks to information from Pau Teixidor, of Rodonyà. Both of them, in 1900, during an excursion to Montmell see the cavities and Font already considers them of very little importance.
