Characteristics

Location

In the Montsec d'Ares (Sant Esteve de la Sarga). From the Coll d'Ares we will head along the paved road to the astronomical observatory; from there we will follow the track until reaching the second ridge, a few metres before arriving at the Grallera de Corona, which is on the left of the track. We will find a cairn on the right of the track; this indicates the point to go to the Grallera d'Alsamora. From the indicated cairn, we will descend in a N direction along the ridge for 240 metres, where we will find the depression where the cavity is located.

Description

Morphology

A wide entrance hidden by vegetation gives access to a shaft 16.70 metres deep. At the base of the shaft and in a S direction, a short ramp places us in a small chamber with a column in the middle. Positioned again at the base of the shaft, in a N direction, a steep ramp will lead us to a sloping chamber where the cavity ends, with a small passage where they have been digging, without apparent results.

Speleothems

In the entrance shaft, and 6 metres from the base, on the N side, we find the access to a short gallery with abundant white formation.

History

We do not know whether it came to be explored by the GES del CMB, in 1963 when they explored the Grallera d'Alsamora, but there is no record of this fact. The first time it is mentioned is in the Catálogo Espeleológico del Montsec, published by the ERE del CEC in 1970 in a monographic issue (11/12) of the magazine Espeleòleg, where they simply note that it is a cavity of little importance. The later catalogues that appeared (Borràs-Miñarro-Talavera) in 1979, and (Jordi de Valles) in 2008, add nothing new about the cavity, since they repeat the same note. We have record that the GESAM de Tremp were there in 2013, but they already found the cavity equipped with “spits”, these look quite well preserved, this makes us think that the cavity cannot have been explored for many years.
