Characteristics

Location

From the coll d'Ares we will head along the asphalted track to the astronomical observatory, then continue along the track that passes right by the pic de Corona; the cavity is located 100 metres north of this summit and about twenty metres from the track, in the municipality of Sant Esteve de la Sarga.

Description

Morphology

An entrance 5 X 2 metres, with a vertical drop of 8 metres where at the base a ramp begins, interspersed with small steps, which finally leads us down to a shaft 55 metres deep of notable dimensions; the base of this shaft has a floor of 40 x 7 metres entirely full of debris and with a strong slope. The end of this slope, flatter but with large blocks, exceeds the -100 level. Here we find beside the wall a new vertical drop which, a few metres further down, places us in a small chamber where at one of its ends we find a narrow passage that allows us to reach the last vertical drop of 10 metres.

Recently a new sector has been explored located beneath the large blocks that form the base of the cavity. Access is via a 6-metre shaft that is fully concretioned, located to the left of the final part of the upper gallery (rigged with natural anchors).

Speleothems

Galeria de les Flors: this gallery contains aragonite formations of high scientific value and extreme fragility. Their brownish colour is due to the presence of natural sediments. The floor is covered with crystals that shatter under the tread of boots; a single footstep destroys centuries of mineral growth. The 'flowers' have a very brittle vitreous structure; the sound of glass they emit when breaking is a sign of irreversible fragility. The mud from boots can contaminate the purity of the crystals and halt their growth.

Progression

To preserve this unique subterranean heritage: DO NOT LEAVE THE CENTRAL PASSAGE. AVOID CONTACT. PROTECT THE SEDIMENT. Respect the cave to ensure that future explorers can enjoy it as you do.

Continuing the exploration, one reaches the Galeria dels Turons.

Other details

Galeria dels Turons: chamber named in honour of the discovery of the remains of three specimens of turons (mustelids), in excellent state of preservation. CONSERVATION NOTICE: Maximum respect is requested for the bone remains; they must not be touched or moved from their original position to allow future biospeleological studies.

History

First exploration carried out in 1966 by the SAS of the CG Barcelonès.

Bio

In the Galeria dels Turons the remains of three specimens of turons (mustelids) have been found, in excellent state of preservation.
