Forat del Vèrtex

Ínfima cavitat d'enfonsament a Castelldefels

Castelldefels • Baix Llobregat12m3m

Tiny collapse cavity in Castelldefels, on the boundary with Gavà, known in speleological circles as Forat del Vèrtex.

Characteristics

Location

Tiny collapse cavity in Castelldefels. From the Roca Negra (the practice wall at Can Roca) you have to climb up to the top part and follow NE along a flat little path that runs along the ridge. Once past elevation 197 the path descends quickly towards a col that joins the Turó Gall and the Turó d'en Vinader. Shortly before reaching the col, beside the path, the collapse from which a fig tree grows is already visible. The boundary between Gavà and Castelldefels runs right through the middle of the cavity and very close by the boundary markers can still be found.

Description

Morphology

Doline-like depression masked by vegetation and the remains of a wall at the bottom of the entrance ramp. In the S corner of the bottom a short gallery with a low ceiling and about 4 metres in length begins.

History

This small cavity, certainly known to hunters and local people, remained unpublished speleologically until a visit by members of the UME de Gavà in the late 1990s who named it cova del Metall, but it may possibly be known by another name that we do not know.

Update January 2019: Our friend Lluís Muntan points out to us that this small cavity is none other than the one explored by Montoriol and Assens (GES – CMB) in August 1952 and which they named Forat del Vèrtex, publishing a very brief note in a work on the Gavà – Castelldefels area in the journal Speleon (1956).
