Description
Morphology
Entering through the Guerrillers mouth, one finds a narrow conduit that immediately communicates with a 26 metre vertical shaft and at its base connects quickly with a new vertical, this one of 31 metres. At its bottom, slightly elevated above the floor, one can access a vertical conduit of minimal dimensions and in a descending direction that leads to the point of maximum depth (-65) and is the section of the pit that was known until the year 2006.
In the middle of this last shaft, on one of its walls, there is a small window that communicates with a parallel shaft (Pou R. Fraguas) of 20 metres of drop from its highest point. From its base, through a window one can access a lower chamber (Sala M. Arbonès) and through a couple of points of its lower zone and of very minimal dimensions one can reach a small shaft (Pou de la Col-i-flor) where at its bottom this route remains closed (-63 m.).
Through the upper zone of the Pou R. Fraguas one can continue ascending and about 20 metres higher, through a lateral window, access a chamber with a high ceiling (Sala Immaculada) and continuing to ascend one can reach a small gallery that leads to a chamber (Sala del Gran Macarró) and from here one can still climb a few more metres until the conduit is closed, although very close to the surface.
Through the Guerrilla mouth the dimensions of the first metres are also not to be too cheerful about and especially for the following passage, a rather narrow subvertical conduit (Tub bufador) that leads into a 10 metre shaft and which is followed by two more small shafts that can be free-climbed (Via Ramonage) and once the so-called Pas de la Llosa is passed, access a 26 metre shaft. In the upper zone of this one can access a gallery slightly ascending that ends up communicating with the upper part of the Pou Fraguas (Guerrillers). Also at the start of the P-26 there is a window that leads to a lateral shaft that descends to elevation -56 by another independent route and that in its upper section presents a lateral gallery that also leads to the upper zone of the Pou Fraguas (Guerrillers).
Descending the wide P-26 and in its lower part is the Sala Santi Serrano; this whole sector is the one of greatest volume of the cavity. In the lower zone of this chamber one can connect to a new shaft (Pou de les Banderes) of 27 metres of depth and at its base some descending conduits of small dimensions begin that end up becoming impenetrable and it is where the point of maximum drop of the cavity is reached (elevation -97).
Returning to the base of the P-26, above the Sala Santi Serrano there is a zone of large blocks that, once passed, allows access to a 7 metre step and to a ramp floor that leads into a new vertical (Pou Dalton) of 20 metres of drop. It should be said that in the highest zone of the ceiling of this sector there is an orifice that communicates with the lower part of the Sala Marc Arbonès (Guerrillers).
The Pou Dalton in its intermediate zone is broken up by an important accumulation of blocks; at this point and through a window in the wall one can descend a blind shaft (Pou del Gour Penjat) that descends a little more than 10 metres. Continuing towards the base of the Pou Dalton we find here three small shafts, in one of which one reaches elevation -93 and near the entrance of one of them, overcoming a small step one can access a lateral chamber (Sala Alex Serrano) where the progression ends.
All this complex network of shafts, chambers and conduits give a total surveyed length of 635 metres.
History
Discovered by two soldiers doing their “mili” in Gavà and who were looking for calcite crystals during a break in military exercises (hence the name of the cavity), when while poking in a crack to extract the mineral they realised its depth and despite the narrowness of the passage -less than 20 cm. wide- they decided to return and after two days of work they managed to open the passage. The first exploration took place on 30-1-1971 by members of the Agrupació Científico-Excursionista de Mataró, who returned a few weeks later and made the first survey on 5-9-1971, considering the exploration of the first two shafts finished down to elevation -65 of depth.
We have practically no news of more visits to the pit, located outside the classic circuits of Garraf. Even some unauthorised voices and without any rigour, for some time had spread the rumour that the cavity had been covered inside the nearby dump. The situation given by its first explorers was quite imprecise but it was clear enough that this fact was quite improbable.
In March of the year 2000, Lluís Muntan, Oscar Andrés (GES) and Carles Ortiz (EC Begues) rediscover the small mouth of the pit and position it correctly.
At the end of 2006, during a visit to the cavity, Rafa Fraguas finds a lateral shaft of 20 metres through a small window in the middle of the last shaft known until then. From here, members of the Secció d'Espeleologia del CE de Sitges, GE Talaia (Vilanova i la Geltrú) and of the SES del CE Ribes begin a laborious search for new conduits that appear both in depth and in the direction of the surface. The clearing of a small hole located a little below the original mouth gives way to the opening of a new pit (Avenc de la Guerrilla) that in addition to reaching the maximum depth (-97 m.) ends up connecting at different points with the new zone of the avenc dels Guerrillers. In May 2008 they can consider finished the survey of the complex of shafts and galleries that form the pit and the results are presented publicly by the authors during the celebration of the I Jornades d'Espeleologia del Garraf, organised by the Espeleo Grup UME de Gavà in June 2008.
