Characteristics

Location

We leave Ponts towards la Seu d'Urgell, at the last roundabout we take the third exit and enter the C-1412-b, which is the road that goes to Tremp. At about kilometre 15.250, at the height of the collada de la Santa and after about 3 kms we turn left towards the Moli Nou where there is a fish farm, then we continue along the track that climbs, always on the left of the river, and we leave the main track on the left, which with a bend leads to the Maçaners farmhouse. Continuing up the track, in good condition at first, with a car that is not an off-road vehicle one can get a little further up, shortly before the house of Terrassola and at a bend that crosses a small cemented torrent, a track comes off that descends to the right, after 500 metres we will reach the end of the path, where a small trail begins that will take us to the Rialb river. Continuing upstream along the riverbank, now on the right, after a few metres we already have to get into the water and swim. Little by little the river becomes a gorge, after a few metres we will reach the start of the famous Forat de Bulí, a very spectacular stretch, we continue upstream along the Rialb river for about 1400 metres until reaching the Gavarra tributary. We continue along the Rialb river for about 400 metres more, we must be very attentive, since the spring pool is about 3 metres above the river level, and it is easy to pass by.

Description

Morphology

The spring has a length of 51 metres. The dive begins at the pool, a ramp that quickly gains depth until reaching the cave entrance. In this stretch the bottom is full of large boulders, the guide line marks a distance of 15 metres, and the depth gauge indicates -6 m. The entrance has a spectacular size that narrows until reaching a stone that forms a kind of joint. Immediately afterwards they enter a bedding plane, which has an approximate height of 35 cm, and a width of several metres depending on the stretch. They manage to pass the bedding plane until reaching a collapse, where one can see that the water current comes from the other side but it is not possible to pass. At this point the length is 40 metres, with a depth of -10 m. On the way out another part of the bedding plane is checked and a small gallery of tiny dimensions and 11 metres in length is found.

Speleothems

The water is crystalline and nothing of percolation, nor sediments, can be seen.

Hydrology

The cavity is an important spring, which contributes part of the water flow of the Riu Rialb. Perhaps the water that comes out of the Font could come from a loss or filtration of the Gavarra torrent, from the area called les Cots, but it would need to be confirmed. On arriving at the Font de Bulí, they notice that the water coming out of the Font is notably warmer than that of the river. They take the dive computer and put it a few metres upstream along the Rialb river, the temperature is 9ºC, they repeat the same procedure inside the pool that forms the entrance to the Font and the measurement gives them 16º C. Once past the Forat de Bulí, and just before leaving the river to take the trail that leads to the car, they take another water temperature measurement giving them 12º C.

Progression

Carles Ramoneda and Joel Borrazàs go upstream along the Rialb river for about 100 metres to the Font de Bulí. As they do not see any guide line installation, they proceed to install it and begin the dive at the pool. They try to find the continuation and manage to pass the bedding plane until reaching a collapse. All the guide line is removed and they return descending along the Rialb river. The dive equipment used for the exploration consists of two 10 l. bottles at 200 bar in side mount.

History

In 1989 Antoni Nubiola of the ERE-CEC carries out a dive at the spring of the Forat de Bolí (Oliana), exploring 35 metres of length and -7 metres until an impenetrable narrowness. In 1994 Josep Guarro of the SIE also makes a reconnaissance confirming that to progress along the bedding plane it is necessary to carry small bottles in side mount. In 2005 again Josep Guarro and J.M. Castillo, equipped with 6 l. bottles at 300 bar in side mount, advance 15 metres more along the bedding plane until it becomes almost impenetrable. Finally, on 12/11/2012, Carles Ramoneda and Joel Borrazàs, both cave divers of the Grup d'Espeleologia de Badalona explore and survey the cavity until it becomes impracticable.
