Description
Morphology
The cave has a passage of 955 metres and a drop of -80 m. The Galeria Proteus has dimensions of approximately 4 metres wide by 2.70 metres high. The Francesc Llauradó air bell has dimensions of 5 metres in diameter and about 10 metres in height.
Progression
The access to the spring is at the bottom of a cone of large stones; once this step is passed, you enter a flooded gallery called Galeria Delgado-Gascó which, after 80 metres of passage, forks at the -17 metre level.
The lower gallery called Galeria Garza, quite sinuous, descends to the -32 metre level; at this point a small gallery in the ceiling connects with the Galeria d'Ariadna, which would allow a circuit to be made inside the cave. Then the Galeria Garza climbs gently up to -17 metres, where an accumulation of blocks bars the way, although it can be seen that the gallery continues between them.
Back at the fork located at 80 metres of passage, we enter the upper gallery called Galeria Ariadna, which has a quite sinuous passage up and down, until reaching the -28 metre level where the zona dels Còdols begins, where the floor is full of stones rounded by the force of the water. The Galeria d'Ariadna gradually gains depth down to the -42 level, which is the section surveyed in 2007.
From this point it is necessary to pass the Pas de l'Estrès and shortly afterwards we reach an important chamber where from the upper part the Galeria Francesc Llauradó begins, which with a passage of 42 metres climbs almost vertically until reaching the Francesc Llauradó air bell.
If we continue along the lower part of the chamber, we will reach the crossing of the Galeria del Fang with the Galeria Proteus. The former continues straight and gains depth down to -45 metres; from this point the gallery ascends gently until reaching the -17 metre level where we will find a clay restriction called Ojete de Satán, where digging is being done to see if it continues; this area has the particularity of having a lot of sediment, which greatly limits visibility.
The cave continues along the Galeria Proteus, which is the one that gains the most depth, with three important restrictions before reaching the exploration limit. The Santa Rita pothole is at the -80 metre level, it is the deepest point of the cave; from here it begins to climb gently up to the -42 metre level; a few metres before this point there is a vertical restriction which appears to be where the cave continues, but so far it has not been possible to pass it.
Currently the Font Bordonera has 955 metres of passage with a drop of -80 m.
History
Although it was known since time immemorial, it was not until the floods of 6-7 November 1982, when the access to the aquifer opened.
On 4 March 1984 Jordi Gascó and Xavier Delgado (ECG) covered 60 metres to the -15 level.
In 1984 the heavy autumn rains caused a slide of blocks and the entrance was blocked again.
On 2 February 1985, Jordi Gascó and Manuel Laborda (ECG) cleared the passage and reached the previous exploration limit, they found a fork and followed the one in front and to the left, reaching an air bell where they saw no continuation. They made a sketch of the exploration carried out.
In 1996 Xavier Garza again cleared the entrance and made the first survey.
In 1997, Xavier Garza and others (ECG) extended the passage to 220 metres and -32 metres.
In 2007 the 'Comissió Tècnica d'Espeleobusseig' resumed the exploration of this spring. David Magdalena found the continuation of the cave through the Galeria d'Ariadna and reached the pas de l'estrès.
Due to the floods, in 2008 the hole was almost closed and members of the 'Comissió Tècnica d'Espeleobusseig' cleaned it and made it larger.
On 9 February Hilari Moreno and Josep Guarro carried out an exploration dive and managed to advance 50 metres more, placing the limit at 292 metres from the entrance and -42 metres. The total passage surveyed up to that moment is 450 metres.
That year the Federació Catalana d'espeleologia awarded them the XVII Premi Font i Sagué to the 'Comissió Tècnica d'Espeleobusseig' for the work carried out at the Font Bordonera, publishing the 2007 survey.
That same year Josep Guarro and Hilari Moreno found the galeria Proteus, reaching the -58m level.
In 2010 Chris Jewell (CDG) and Artur Kozlowski with the help of David Magdalena carried out a dive with rebreathers (Meglodon-Ispiration) exploring 120 metres at the limit reached by Josep Guarro and Hilari Moreno from -58 to -62 m.
On 20 May 2011 the documentary by Josep M. Castellví 'Els rastres del Tethys' premiered in Lleida, with the collaboration of Josep Guarro and Hilari moreno of 'Proteus', who since 2007 had been combining the explorations of the cave with the filming.
On 25 May 2011, Joel Borrazás discovered an air bell 250 metres from the entrance, in the -38 area just after the pas de l'estrés, and in memory of Francesc Llauradó he gave it his name.
On 29 May 2011, Jordi Yherla starting from 500 metres from the entrance and from the -62 metre level, installed 175 more metres of guide line at the limit of Chris Jewell and Artur Kozlowski Galeria de les Espelmes, reaching a maximum depth of -80 metres at the pou de Santa Rita. From this point the gallery climbs in a gentle but continuous ascent up to the -48 metre level where the exploration stops.
On 5 June 2011 Joel Borrazás discovered the second air bell of the cave located in the galeria d'Ariadna.
On 17 June Joel Borrazás in open circuit, explored 150 metres in the Galeria del fang from the limit reached by the 'Proteus' group.
In 2012 the clearing work began on the final restriction of the Galeria del fang, called Ojete de Satán. Both the gallery and the final restriction are areas with a lot of sediment and visibility is easily lost.
In 2014 and 2015 after several floods, the guide line was damaged. It was decided to change the entire guide line installation with a new metred line in order to carry out a new survey. During that year Joan Alcántara, Guaica Armisen, Carles Ramoneda and Joel Borrazás re-surveyed the cave up to the beginning of the deep part.
Between 2016 and 2017 a habitat was installed inside the cave to be able to carry out long decompressions in a safer way; for the installation and adjustment of this habitat at the appropriate depth about 5 dives were needed.
Eliseo Belunce and Joel Borrazás with the help of other colleagues installed 12 safety bottles at different points of the cave and carried out 5 dives to survey up to the limit reached by Jordi Yherla. Possible continuations were searched for and an unknown was found a few metres before the final limit.
A few weeks later both returned, this time with the help of 'Scooters' propulsors which made it easier for them to approach the area to be checked; unfortunately, when carrying back-mounted equipment they were unable to pass the vertical crack. In this last entry Joel Borrazás (GEB), Eliseo Belunce and Josi Olave (Club Otxola), Carles Ramoneda (ECMB), Guaica Armisen, Jonathan Alcantara, Ferran Marqués, Felipe Miguel, Sven Rochlitzer, Oscar Dolcet took part.
