Location

From Ulldemolins we will head to the Sant Antoni recreation area; from there a wide path leads to Fraguerau. After passing the Gleva spring, at the height of the Cadolles Fondes we will turn right onto a narrow path that will take us to the cova del Fem, upstream of the Montsant river.

Description

Morphology

The rock shelter is 32 metres wide and 8 metres deep; a small part of the floor plan of a total of 250 square metres is altered by the archaeological excavation. Although the name appears in the plural, it is a single large shelter, although there is a small adjoining cavity that would have contributed to forming this name. The shelter is oriented to the north-west and is located 10 metres above the current bed of the Montsant river.

History

Cave known since ancient times. As for the site, it was discovered in 1997 by chance by Marc Boada while he was hiking in the area. During this visit to the cave he recognised a large quantity of archaeological material on the surface.

In 2000, members of the research team created around the Neolithic site of la Draga visited the cave for the first time accompanied by Mr. Boada, and they confirmed the great dispersion of material on the surface and its probable Neolithic attribution. Until 2020, two archaeological interventions have been carried out. Part of the cave had previously already been excavated by looters.
