Cova Petita de Can Rata

Cova Petita de Can Rata

Ínfima coveta a Sales de Llierca (Garrotxa)

Sales de Llierca • Garrotxa6m0

A tiny little cave in Sales de Llierca (Garrotxa), with a semicircular entrance 90 cm wide and 60 cm high that leads to a flat-floored chamber 5 m by 4.5 m with a maximum height of 1.75 m.

Characteristics

Location

To get there, from Tortellà take the road to Sales de Llierca and continue along the paved track that crosses the Borró stream. Further on, on the left, we will find the start of the track leading to Can Bosc (closed with a chain). Halfway along its route, the track crosses the sot Fosc, a tributary of the Borró, and about 300 m further on it makes a sharp 90-degree bend to the right. The coves de Can Rata are located just below the bend. If we wanted to, we could reach the caves by going straight down, but the terrain is difficult both because of the slope and because of the vegetation. So we rule out this option and continue up the track until we find a path on the left (marked with yellow paint). This path is the old path from Sales to Lliurona. We will follow it downhill and thus reach the balma d'en Birol, located right beside the path. Continuing along it, further on we will see on the left a stone cairn marking the start of a secondary path. Following it will lead us directly to the cova de Can Rata. The cova Petita de Can Rata is about 60 m to the SE, following downhill along the base of the limestone bar where both caves are found.
