Cova de Can Rata

Cova de Can Rata

Petita cova a Sales de Llierca (Garrotxa)

Sales de Llierca • Garrotxa10m0

Small cave in Sales de Llierca (Garrotxa), known as the cova de Can Rata, with a triangular entrance and a passage of 9.5 m.

Characteristics

Location

To get there, from Tortellà take the road to Sales de Llierca and continue along the paved track that crosses the Borró stream. Further on, on the left, you will find the start of the track leading to Can Bosc (closed with a chain). Halfway along its route, the track crosses the sot Fosc, a tributary of the Borró, and about 300 m further on it makes a sharp 90-degree bend to the right. The coves de Can Rata are located just below the bend. If we chose to, we could reach the caves by descending straight down, but the terrain is difficult both because of the slope and because of the vegetation. So we rule out this option and continue up the track until we find a path on the left (marked with yellow paint). This path is the old path from Sales to Lliurona. We will follow it downhill and so reach the balma d'en Birol (Balma d'en Birol), located right beside the path. Continuing along it, further on we will see on the left a stone cairn marking the start of a secondary path. Following it will lead us directly to the cova de Can Rata (Cova de Can Rata).

Description

Morphology

Situated at the foot of a cliff. A more or less triangular entrance about 4.5 m wide, partially closed with dry-stone walls. It gives access to a spacious chamber with a flat floor, except for the final section, with good conditions for habitation. The total passage is 9.5 m, always maintaining a width of between 4 and 5 metres. The western wall, sloping and relatively smooth, is blackened with smoke.

History

The cova de Can Rata (Cova de Can Rata) owes its name to an old house of that name, of which only a few stones of a wall remain, visible on the track to Can Bosc.

The cave has been used since distant times, probably to keep livestock, as shown by the dry-stone walls that close the entrance and the smoke-blackened walls. It is known that between the decades of 1940 and 1950 a young woman from Tortellà, named Adela, lived there in her youth. They say she looked after the herd and the cave served as her home.

From the speleological point of view, the first written reference is found in the book 'Santa Maria del Mont. Notícia històrica d'aquest santuari', published in 1931 and authored by Pere Vayreda Olivas (1877-1944). The book ends with some appendices, the first of which is entitled 'Balmes i habitacions humanes primitives que hi ha esparses per la muntanya'. Without intending to, Pere Vayreda had published the first speleological catalogue of the Alta Garrotxa, in which 21 cavities located in the mountains surrounding the sanctuary of the Mont are mentioned. Among them the cova de Can Rata (Cova de Can Rata) and the balma d'en Birol (Balma d'en Birol), although he did not know their location.

As a consequence of this catalogue, Francesc Miret mentions the cova de Can Rata (Cova de Can Rata) in the book 'Coves de l'Alta Garrotxa' (1999), of which he is co-author together with Martí García. The same data are reproduced in the 'Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya', Vol-3 year 2009, by Jordi de Valles. In both cases they limit themselves to recording the existence of this cavity, without adding any other data to those provided by Pere Vayreda.
