Description

Morphology

The Cova is in reality a rockshelter of medium proportions, 11.6 metres wide, a depth of 8 metres and an approximate height of about 3.5 metres. It is oriented to the E-SE, and it is closed with a grille.

Speleothems

Both the right-hand and the inner area of the cavity are quite blackened, possibly by fires of shepherds and other visitors, and beneath them remains of pigmentation are observed that demonstrate the existence of a certain number of figures. At present, and clearly, two painted areas are observed: that of the left-hand end of the rockshelter, where most of the figures are concentrated, and the one found just on entering, to the right of the access door. The first group of paintings is oriented to the north and occupies a surface of 2.5 m. A total of 29 motifs can be counted, corresponding to quadrupeds, human representations, concentric circles, a doe, strokes and remains of pigment.

Progression

No topography is available.

History

All references give as the discoverer of this ensemble a resident of Os de Balaguer, Mr. Josep M. Borràs i Viu. The investigation of the ensemble was carried out by Lluís Díez-Coronel and Dr. Joan Maluquer de Motes i Nicolau.

During the year 1986 the paintings were the subject of an exhaustive documentation, within the "Projecte Corpus de Pintures Rupestres de Catalunya" carried out by the Servei d'Arqueologia del Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
