A 110-metre-long cave in Os de Balaguer, with three levels formed by rockfalls and movements of strata.

Characteristics

Location

It is located on a ledge of one of the reliefs that descend from the peak of Guardialta, the first one found along the track from Os de Balaguer to les Avellanes and 70 metres above the track, at the only point where rock is visible.

From the access to the cemetery of Os de Balaguer, a track continues in a N direction which, after a zigzag, forks; you must keep to the right. A little further on we leave a path on the left and must continue straight ahead. After 140 metres we come to a fork which we follow to the left; 80 metres further on, on the left, we find a small path which must be followed for about 250 metres to the cavity.

Description

Morphology

The two entrance mouths place us in a sloping conduit that leads to the main chamber of the cavity. Towards the E, and after a passage of reduced dimensions, one can continue for some 8 metres. Towards the W, the gallery forks vertically, the upper one being the longer (15 metres). At the upper end of the N wall of the main chamber, due to a rockfall of the stratum, the access to the lower gallery of some 60 metres in length opens up. It seems that the cavity opened due to the movement of one of the strata, which have a dip of 30º, later modified by the rockfall of the upper stratum, thus forming three differentiated levels.

History

The first data we have are provided by O. Escolà in his Catàleg del Montsec (1970), where he calls it Forat de l'Os and gives a very brief description (he attributes some 30 metres of length to it) that rather seems taken from others' references, although we know that in November 1968 people from the ERE-CEC were in the area for biospeleological purposes.

In March 1970 members of the SIRE-UEC Gràcia pay a visit to the cavity and later (1972) publish the drawing (very deficient) of the plan and a brief record card (they attribute some 50 metres of length to it). During the campaign in the area they say they also explored another cavity called els Bufadors, of which they only mention that it has 100 metres of length and 12 of depth.

It is not until the year 1992 that members of the GE Lleidatà visit it and make a more accurate survey and specify that the Forat d'Os and els Bufadors are the same cavity.
