Cova del Vilar

Cova del Vilar

Petita cova ascendent a l'Alta Garrotxa (Montagut i Oix)

Montagut i Oix • Garrotxa18m8m

Small ascending cave in the Alta Garrotxa (Montagut i Oix), perched above the Hortmoier valley, near the Vilar de Talaixà. Route of 18 m and a positive drop of 8 m.

Characteristics

Location

Perched above the Hortmoier valley. Considerably higher than the Vilar de Talaixà, from which the cave takes its name. Between the escaler del Vilar and the Fontica.

To get there, we start from the Hortmoier valley, which is reached from the village of Oix. We will cross the stream by the palanca del Samsó and go as far as the Vilar de Talaixà, an old hamlet of a few houses with a church that lies in ruins and overrun by vegetation. From the Vilar onwards the route becomes complicated, since the paths are poorly defined and difficult to follow, so you must pay attention. We will go up by the escaler del Vilar and head towards the Fontica, but before reaching it, on a small flat ledge, we will have to leave the path to the right and in about 50 m we will reach the cave entrance.

Description

Morphology

South-facing entrance that leads into a straight ascending gallery with a constant inclination of around 25 degrees. At the end the gallery turns to the right and finishes after a few metres. The gallery has a rounded section, often elliptical, with an average width close to 3 m and a height of 2 metres or slightly more.

It is a characteristic pressure conduit, with eroded walls and little sediment on the floor, except for the final metres where a clayey sediment seems to fill the natural continuation of the cave. Total route of 18 m with a positive drop of 8 m.

Speleothems

A few small, very localised concretions.

History

Cavity known to some hikers and local people. On the Editorial Alpina map 'Alta Garrotxa' the cave symbol appears in the correct place, but without any name labelled (2018-2019 edition). It does not appear in any catalogue, publication or account of a speleological nature. Speleologically unpublished.
