Montagut i Oix • Garrotxa 9m

A shelter with a small temporary spring in the Garrotxa, 18 m wide by 9 m deep, with drips and gours. Located and visited by Ferran Cardona in July 2020.

Characteristics

Location

About 800 m north of Sant Miquel d'Hormoier, on the left hydrographic slope of the torrent del Toll.

We will start from the village of Oix to take the track (only suitable for 4×4 vehicles) that leads to the Hortmoier valley. After passing the narrow passage known as grau d'Escales the track enters the valley and half a kilometre later we will have to leave it to take the path that crosses the riera de Beget over the palanca del Samsó. Once on the other side, we will follow a track towards the masia del Ripoll. A few metres before reaching it, an old track, now very damaged, comes out on the right and climbs steeply. After a few hairpin bends we will leave it to take a not very marked path that comes out on the left. The path goes up the torrent del Toll along the left hydrographic slope at a certain height above it. The path becomes complicated and at a given moment crosses a scree slope. Right here we will have to leave it to climb up the mountain – without a path – until we reach the foot of a limestone crag, which we will follow to the right until we find the cavity. On this stretch there are some other smaller shelters that have not been taken into consideration.

Description

Morphology

It is a shelter and temporary spring 18 m wide by a maximum depth of 9 m. In the innermost part, the shelter forms a highly concretion-covered step, giving rise to small conduits and holes between concretions (perhaps hence the name Foradada).

Speleothems

We find drips and some small gours that we found full of water in the middle of July.

Hydrology

The temporary water flow seems to come from a fissure, which may be significant judging by the marked channel it has excavated in the floor of the shelter.

History

The name of the cavity appears labelled on the ICGC map. However, it does not appear in any speleological catalogue. Located and visited by Ferran Cardona in July 2020.
