Characteristics

Location

From Mont-ral, we head W and take the camí de la Foradada, pass along the serrat de l'Avenc until reaching a col where we see la Foradada and head towards it. Once past la Foradada we continue to the right at the foot of the cliff, pass through a rock tunnel and after about 250 metres from la Foradada we climb up a rocky slope towards the base of the upper cliff where we will find, first the lower entrance of the cova de Mont-ral and about twenty metres further on the cova del Codó.

Description

Morphology

The large entrance leads into a gallery that gradually narrows until it becomes tight and ends in a pit that connects with a gallery situated 14 metres lower down. This chamber, elongated in a N-S direction, connects laterally with a gallery that heads towards the WSW, which after 12 metres reaches a new pit of -6 metres, at the bottom of which and slightly elevated there is a crawl that gives access to another chamber in the shape of a window, opening about 2 metres above its base. This chamber is elongated in a NE-SW direction with a low ceiling and the floor occupied by a large quantity of gours with water, the whole chamber is of great beauty.

History

Mentioned by J. Ferraté in his work Espeleologia de les comarques tarragonines, without providing any further data. It was certainly known and possibly visited by hikers from Reus.

In his biospeleological research, F.Español and A.Lagar visited it on more than one occasion in 1951.

It was not until 1972 that its first and only known survey was published, carried out by members of the GIEM (Montblanc) in 1971 and 1972, calling it Avenc d'en Cudó.
