Description
Morphology
The entrance gallery links laterally with a gallery that heads S, at this point the gallery ascends, placing us in front of a small step of 5 metres of drop, which can easily be overcome by descending along the left side of the gallery; this continues to a circular chamber with a large stalagmite in the centre, and in this stretch before the chamber we find a false upper gallery. Likewise throughout this whole stretch we find countless roots hanging from the ceiling.
The gallery continues to a new chamber located at a lower level but easily accessible from the left side of the gallery. From here on the gallery diminishes in size and partly collapses until reaching a fork where the two passages soon become closed.
Speleothems
A large stalagmite in the centre of a circular chamber.
Progression
The entrance gallery links laterally with a gallery that heads S, at this point the gallery ascends, placing us in front of a small step of 5 metres of drop, which can easily be overcome by descending along the left side of the gallery.
History
The first reference to this cavity is by Joan Ferraté in his work Espeleologia de les comarques tarragonines (1918), although he only mentions it without providing any concrete data. In 1946, P.Palau in the circular of the Club Excursionista de Gràcia gives a description of a cave that he calls Cova dels Motllats, which is undoubtedly Cova de la Moneda.
In the autumn of 1951, F.Español and A.Lagar, in their biospeleological research in the Muntanyes de Prades, visit the cavity at least a couple of times.
We know that the cave is well known to speleologists of the Camp de Tarragona during the decade of the 1950s, but there is no complete bibliographic record until the exploration by members of the SIE – CEA in 1966, who carried out the first survey. Subsequently, in 1973 the ERE of the CEC carried out a new survey that remained unpublished until its inclusion in EspeleoÍndex.
