Cova del Cingle dels Pins Alts

Cova de 43 metres de recorregut a Vilaverd (Conca de Barberà)

Vilaverd • Conca de Barberà43m9m

A 43-metre-long cave in Vilaverd (Conca de Barberà), beneath the Ploms climbing route, on the Cingle dels Pins Alts.

Characteristics

Location

On the TV-7044 road going from La Riba to el Pinetell, at the height of the Molí de la Font Gran and just below the Campament Juvenil, we find a designated parking area. On the right-hand side of the road there is a path that descends to the Brugent river, at this point almost always dry; you must cross it and follow the path towards the cliff. Soon we will find a junction: the one on the right leads to the cova Cartanyà and to the Penya Roja, you must follow the one on the left. Shortly after we will find a new junction, we will follow the one on the right. The path runs along the base of the Cingle dels Pins Alts where there are more than sixty climbing routes. After passing a fairly steep section the path becomes flat and descends a little; at this point the mouth of the cave is found. Just above the cave there is a metal plaque with the name of the route Ploms, although this is not visible until you have passed the cave and the path climbs again.

Description

Morphology

The mouth gives access to a gallery in the form of a joint where the floor descends in a gentle slope with some small stepped rise, while the ceiling rises quickly. On reaching the lowest point the gallery rises again, in this case steeply while the ceiling becomes lower, until reaching a point where on the right a perpendicular gallery comes in to us. If we continue straight along the passage we were following, after about four metres it turns to the left and ends two metres further on. Following the passage on the right we must overcome a rise with a block that forms a narrow passage and we find a junction of joints; continuing straight the gallery rises a few metres and ends, if we follow to the right after 4 metres we find ourselves in front of a shaft of -7 metres that leads to the lowest point of the entrance gallery.

The height difference is 9 metres (-4m/+5m).

History

It is quite evident that the cave was already known and must have some name, since it is located just below the climbing route “Ploms” in the Penya Roja area, and specifically at the base of the Cingle dels Pins Alts; moreover, the path used by climbers passes by the mouth of the cave. The fact of not having found any documentation about the cavity and that the questioning of climbers who were in the area had been negative, we have opted to provisionally give it the name that corresponds to the place name of the location where the cavity is found, awaiting someone who has more information to provide it to us.
