Avencs dels Tres Grans - Xesc

Avenc de 23 m. de fondària a la Penya Roja (Vilaverd)

Vilaverd • Conca de Barberà80m23m

A 23 m deep pit at Penya Roja (Vilaverd), with an entrance 0.80 m by 5 m, two chambers and a connection with the avenc d'en Xesc.

Characteristics

Location

On the TV-7044 road going from La Riba to the Pinetell, at the height of the Molí de la Font Gran and just below the Campament Juvenil, we find a prepared parking place. On the right side of the road there is a path that goes down to the Brugent river, at this point almost always dry; it is necessary to cross it and follow the path in the direction of the cliff. Soon we will find a crossroads: the one on the right goes to La Riba and to the cova Cartanyà, while the one on the left, which is the one we must follow, heads towards the climbing routes of the Cingle dels Pins Alts and to the Penya Roja. Immediately we will find a new crossroads: the one on the left leads to the climbing routes of the Cingle dels Pins Alts, so we will continue to the right in the direction of the Penya Roja. Once we have arrived at it, we find a small flat area on the left of the path and a few metres above it the entrance of the cavity opens.

Description

Morphology

The entrance, 0.80 metres wide by 5 metres high, gives way to a chamber 15 metres long by 5 metres above its base. From this chamber, through a descending gallery that leaves from its W wall, it connects with another one of wider proportions. This second chamber is rounded and about 10 metres in diameter, from which some short branches leave and in one of them there is a pit 8 metres deep half obstructed by debris and where the point of maximum drop is reached. It should be noted that in the ERE and EPE topography (1973) the 0 level is located at the highest point of the entrance, that is to say 6 metres above the entry point and for this reason a depth of 23 metres is attributed to it. On the other hand the connection with the avenc d'en Xesc, which is at a higher level, gives it a greater depth, being probably -23 metres the real level.

Progression

On the left of the entrance there is an open-air fissure; following it, one soon has to overcome a step about 3 metres high. Immediately afterwards we find a perpendicular fissure that has an exit at both ends; just crossing this fissure we find the pit giving access to the avenc d'en Xesc.

Other details

Like all the neighbouring cavities, the cavity is the product of the displacement of the limestone mass of the Penya Roja that has given rise to this whole series of interstitial cavities.

History

The first news we have of the cavity is that of the exploration by members of the GIEM – CE Montblanc who surveyed it on 5 November 1971.

At the end of August 1973 it was surveyed again by members of the ERE – CEC and of the EPE of Reus and which had remained unpublished until now.

We do not know who and when carried out the digging at the avenc d'en Xesc that achieved the communication between both cavities.
