Cova de la Verge

Petita cova reconvertida en capella a Torrelles de Foix (Alt Penedès)

Torrelles de Foix • Alt Penedès11m0

A small cave converted into a chapel in Torrelles de Foix (Alt Penedès), known since time immemorial and mentioned in old speleological catalogues.

Characteristics

Location

From km 4.25 of the BV-2122 road (between Sant Martí Sarroca and Pontons) an asphalted track leads to the "la Plana de les Torres" residential area. After 2.25 km along this track, we will find on our right a sign with the indication "Santuari de Sta. Maria de Foix" and a track, partly asphalted, partly dirt, which we will follow for approximately 1 km until it is barred by a chain. We will leave the car in the parking area and in a little more than 200 metres we will reach the sanctuary. We will pass by the building and continue to the end and a few metres later we will find the avencó de Foix on our right, in the middle of the forest. We will continue to the end and a small path (signposted "cova") that descends leads to the cave in a few metres.

Description

Morphology

The entrance, with an unlocked grille, is about 3 metres wide by 6 high. The first 3.5 metres are arranged with cement and a small wall must be negotiated on the left. The cave consists of a single gallery that progressively loses width and height, until it ends 11 metres from the entrance.

History

Known since time immemorial and mentioned in old speleological catalogues (Puig y Larraz; Font; Faura,...). We know that in 1950 it was visited by Angel Lagar during his biospeleological research in the Penedès, calling it la Cova de Foix.

According to a legend, the image of the Virgin appeared in the cave; a shepherd took it and went to tell the others of his find; on the way he noticed that the image had slipped out of his bag and he returned to the cave where he found it again in the same place; he took it again and three times it escaped him. The people of Torrelles, aware of the event, decided to build a chapel at the place of the find.
