Avencó de Foix

Avencó de Foix

Ínfim avenc de poc més de 3 m. de fondària a Torrelles de Foix (Alt Penedès)

Torrelles de Foix • Alt Penedès12m3m

Tiny pit just over 3 m deep in Torrelles de Foix (Alt Penedès).

Characteristics

Location

From km 4.25 of the BV-2122 road (between Sant Martí Sarroca and Pontons) an asphalted track leads to the "la Plana de les Torres" residential development. After 2.25 km along this track, on our right we will find a sign reading "Santuari de Sta. Maria de Foix" and a track, partly asphalted and partly dirt, which we follow for approximately 1 km until it is barred by a chain. We will leave the car in the car park and in just over 200 metres we will reach the sanctuary. We will pass the building and continue to the end, and a few metres further on we will find the avencó de Foix on our right, in the middle of the forest.

Description

Morphology

Tiny pit just over 3 m deep in Torrelles de Foix (Alt Penedès).

Progression

The entrance is made through the central part of the cavity. On our left (West) a short ramp leads us to the bottom of the pit, while on the right (East) the vegetation does not allow access to another ramp, but we can reach the end from the outside.

History

It is to be supposed that this phenomenon has been known since remote times by the people of the area. Angel Lagar (1952) mentions the avenc de Foix (not the avencó), a cavity difficult to find and located in the area of Cal Magí Rossell.

The oldest survey that we know of (so far unpublished) corresponds to members of the GM Gelera (Barcelona) made around the year 1972 or 1973. Subsequently, the cavity is named Avenc de la Humitat by Joan Virella (and it still appears as such in the ICC). Under this same name it is published by G. Aymamí in 1988. Jordi de Valles (2014) believes that the avenc de la Humitat is an impenetrable hole located a few metres from the avencó de Foix; we do not share this theory.
