A 12 m deep pit near the hermitage of Foix (Torrelles de Foix).

Characteristics

Location

From km 4.2 of the BV-2122 road from Torrelles de Foix to Pontons, a turn-off to the right leads to the sanctuary of Foix. We will leave the car in the sanctuary car park, on the NW side of this esplanade and at the base of a small hill called el Pujolet or Puig Pedregós.

We will take a path, which we must leave after about fifty metres (we will find a pit marker), we will head left upwards, cross-country; on our right we will see an old dry-stone hut next to a small gully, we will cross this, here we will observe a couple of cavities between blocks, not catalogable, and at the top (left bank of the torrent) we will find the avenc del Rot.

Description

Morphology

A 2×0.80 metre entrance leads to a P-2.50; at the base of this we can see a crawl that easily drops us into a P-6.80.

We find ourselves in a joint, one metre wide on average, with many fallen blocks. The descent of the shaft ends in a ramp; if we climb in a NW direction, after 4 metres it ends in a plug of rocks. On the left we observe a fissure of some 4.50 metres, but totally impassable due to its narrowness.

If we go down, the gallery runs in a S direction, the height is some 3 metres, the width continues at around 1 metre. On the right-hand side there are two small pits of some 2 metres, of difficult access; the second is the one that gives the maximum depth of the cavity: -12 metres.

Speleothems

The walls are covered by lithogenic processes.

History

Cited by Virella (1978) who only says: Avenc del Rot, -20; 18 (at Puig Pedregós). The same Virella, in bulletin no. 185 (1978) of the Agrupació Excursionista Talaia (Vilanova i la Geltrú) reports that members of the Centre Excursionista del Penedès had recently explored the so-called Avenc del Rot.

In February 1989, members of SIRE – UEC Sants explore in the area a small pit 12 metres deep and believe they have rediscovered the avenc Josep Cuadrench and publish it under this name.

When in September 2016 the colleagues of the GEB and the CE Castellar do the cataloguing work of the area of el Pujolet or Puig Pedregós, they realise that the avenc Josep Cuadrench is another nearby cavity. With good judgement, they decide to give the name avenc del Rot to this other pit.
