Cova de la Porca

Cova de la Porca

Àmplia cova de 24 m de recorregut a Mora d'Ebre

Móra d'Ebre • Ribera d'Ebre24m8m

Cave with a 24 m route in Móra d'Ebre, with an entrance 15 m wide and 10 m high, a two-level section, and surveyed on 24-7-2025.

Characteristics

Location

About 5 km NW of Móra d'Ebre, not far from the hermitages of Santa Madrona and Sant Jeroni. At the foot of a major crag located NE of the peak of la Picossa (499 m). A little more than a hundred metres from the avenc de la Picossa, the most important cavity in the area (32 m deep and 188 m long).

To get there, from the NW side of Móra d'Ebre an asphalted track sets out that in about 6 km leaves us at the hermitage of Sant Jeroni, where there is a beautiful recreation area. We will continue along a track in good condition for about 800 m, until we find a path on the right that, after climbing a height difference of around 130 m, leaves us at the cave itself. If we do not take this path, about 80 m further on another path sets out that also leads there; it is longer but allows us to pass in front of the pit of la Picossa and through the so-called Racó dels Avencs.

Description

Morphology

The entrance, located at the foot of a major wall, is of good size, 15 m wide by about 10 m high. The first metres are of the rock-shelter type, but on the NW side a gallery goes into the mountain. A small climb is necessary over what appears to be an accumulation of ancient compacted sediment later eroded. This means that the cave has a cross-section at two levels, the upper one, which coincides with the upper part of the sediment, and the lower one, which corresponds to the natural level of the cavity. The cave is of comfortable dimensions, although care is needed when passing from the upper level to the lower one. Total route, 24 m.

History

Cave very well known by the people of the area. It even appears on tourist information panels found on the mountain. In fact, its large entrance is clearly visible from a long distance. The place name Cova de la Porca appears labelled on the ICC map in the correct place.

Despite all this and the fact that it is close to the avenc de la Picossa, we are not aware that the cova de la Porca appears in any catalogue or any publication of speleological scope. For this reason, members of ECM Barcelonès and GE Badalona went on 24-7-2025 to carry out the surveying and cataloguing tasks.
