Cova de la Casa Santa

Cova de la Casa Santa

Interessant cova a la cara Nord de la Serra de Sant Joan, Cabó.

Cabó • Alt Urgell27m1m

Cave on the north face of the Serra de Sant Joan, Cabó, known since remote times and cited in various speleological publications.

Characteristics

Location

The cave is located on the north face of the Serra de Sant Joan, in Cabó.

Access has been made starting from the Cova d'Ormini; one must go without a path to the upper part of the canal Llovera and descend the steep canal to the base, then one must follow the base of the cliff eastwards, a little more than a hundred metres; la Cova is found shortly before reaching a long rock shelter. It is a route of 1260 metres there and back with a total accumulated elevation gain of 175 metres.

It can also be accessed via the Camí d'Escales, which climbs from Cabó to the Prat Muntaner; past the Revolts del Rantell there are some forest tracks that climb up the mountain, but one must end up climbing through the middle of the forest to the base of the cliff, and both the elevation gain and the route are much greater than that indicated above.

Description

Morphology

An entrance of less than one metre in both width and height gives way to a short ascending passage that places us in a wide chamber divided into two parts because in the middle of the chamber we find a low ceiling that gives the sensation of dividing it into two parts. In this first part, on the ceiling, we find an ascending passage with no continuation. Past the low ceiling we find the widest part of the chamber, with a floor with quite a few blocks.

Hydrology

On the floor of the first part of the chamber there are some small gours with water.

History

Known since remote times. The first reference we know of is by Faura i Sans (1911), who mentions la Casa Santa in the summary of an excursion in August 1910 through the Organyà area together with the biospeleologists Jeannel and Racovitza. They do not visit it, but he gives the information that had been provided to him by Ceferí Rocafort, a native of la Pobla de Segur and member of the CEC.

It is not until April 1964 that, in an “extension” of the Operació Solsonès, speleologists from different groups visit the Cabó area and among the cavities visited they cite the Cova de la Casa Santa, saying only that it is a small cavity (Escolà, 1977).

At the end of 1965, in a monographic work on the Boumort (Senent i Victoria, 1965) they mention these explorations without giving data but they add to the work a so-called Cova Santa, but giving only an approximate location that comes close to that of the Casa Santa.

In the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (Borràs; Miñarro; Talavera, 1978) only the latter appears.

In a hiking guide to the Boumort (Cortès, 2005) the Casa Santa is cited and a fairly precise location is given but with practically no further detail.

In the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya (de Valles, 2009) both are listed, practically without concrete data.

At present we are practically certain that both toponyms refer to a single cavity, the Cova de la Casa Santa.

On the ICGC map, in this same area a toponym is cited: Pou de la Casa Santa, which we are completely unaware of what it refers to.
