Small cave with 27 m of passage at the riera de Begues (Olesa de Bonesvalls), a rock shelter 15 m wide and 5 m high at most.

Characteristics

Location

Driving along the BV-2411 road from Begues to Olesa de Bonesvalls, we will leave the car at km 17.65, just before crossing the pont de l'Escalat, at the start of a track. We will go to the road and descend to the riera de Begues on the other side of the road. Once in the riverbed we will follow it for about 10 or 15 metres towards the sea and we will see on our left a crag with very dark walls. The cavity is at the base of the crag.

Description

Morphology

It is a rock shelter 15 metres wide and a maximum height of 5 metres. The N side has little depth, while on the S it reaches 6 metres. Approximately in the centre of the rock shelter there is a narrow opening that leads to a dark little chamber 3 x 4 metres with a low ceiling (1 metre on average), where light is seen coming from a very low and impracticable entrance located about 2 metres to the right of the opening through which we have passed. The little chamber continues about 2 metres inwards, but with a very low ceiling.

History

The location of this cavity was known from the Inventari del Patrimoni Arqueològic de Catalunya and also because it is on the ICC map. However, the authors of the record sheet needed two outings to locate it, since the coordinates in the Inventari are wrong, as is its location on the map.

We do not know where this ill-chosen name of Cova de la Balma comes from and which someone has tried to turn into Cova de la Palma, erasing part of the B.

Nevertheless, it is almost certainly the cave that members of the short-lived group of amateurs from Olesa de Bonesvalls affiliated to GES – CMB explored around the year 1976 and which they named Cova dels Mosquits.
