A 38 m deep pit in the Begues stream (Olesa de Bonesvalls), a temporary sinkhole with a 10 m shaft and a 28 m drop.

Characteristics

Location

Along the road from Begues to Olesa de Bonesvalls, shortly before reaching the latter (Km. 17.7) is the so-called pont de l'Escalat that crosses the Begues stream. Past the bridge is the entrance street to the Can Xacó development, and shortly after turning a path descends to the stream down a heavily overgrown slope. About 50 metres upstream from the bridge and right by the streambed is the mouth of the pit.

Description

Morphology

Through a small opening one enters a 10 metre shaft; at its bottom, through a side window, one reaches a new 28 metre drop. Its bottom consists of silts and small clasts. In a corner of the bottom a narrow, short passage begins.

Hydrology

Temporary sinkhole of the Begues stream, which during times of heavy flooding we have been able to see completely flooded by the waters, which means that inside some debris carried by the current can be found.

History

The first exploration of which we have record is the one carried out by members of the GES – CMB in October 1962.

We will always be left with the doubt whether the vanished pit of the Riera de Begues, explored only by Dr. Francesc Español and to which a depth of 70 metres was attributed (Speleon V;1-2), could not be this same one. The description, if we except the speleometric differences, fits. In the epic account by Joaquim Montoriol: “Catorce horas de lucha en el avenc de l'Escarrá” (Boletín del CMB, 1952) mention is already made of a pit at the stream and, from the few details he gives, it seems to be the avenc del Pont de l'Escalat. The veterans of the GES have always been opposed to this totally unprovable theory and affirm having been at the point of the stream where large blocks plug that sinkhole.
