Cova de Can Soler de Secabecs

Petita cova d'interès arqueològic a Torrelles de Foix

Torrelles de Foix • Alt Penedès20m5m

Small cave of archaeological interest in Torrelles de Foix, with two entrances and speleothems.

Characteristics

Location

Access is from the BP-2121 road (Vilafranca del Penedès-La Llacuna). At km 20.37, shortly after passing the houses of les Llambardes, there is a turnoff to the left that by a track leads to the farmhouse of Can Soler de Secabecs. From here one must follow the camí de Llambardes to the coll de Cal General and continue in a SE direction skirting a cultivated field and then towards the S until reaching the upper part of the cliff that dominates the Foix valley, until finding the hole that allows us to go to the other side of the cliff, where by a path that skirts it and some 30 m further to the E and some 5 m above the base is the upper entrance.

Description

Morphology

The cave has two entrances. The lower entrance is 2 m wide and 1.4 m high and opens to the southeast. The section that can be traversed is quite short, with a low ceiling, and leads to various crawls. On the floor there was all sorts of straw, as if it were the bed of some animal.

The upper entrance is 1 m in diameter, and is located 5 metres from the floor; the entrance forms a small vestibule with a step 1.5 m high and 0.5 m wide that leads to a room, labyrinthine with different levels caused by the fall of blocks from the ceiling.

Some 30 m west of the cave is the so-called Abric-Túnel de Secabecs, a small hole in the cliff, about 6 m long and which serves to access the cliff where the cave is located.

Also, and between the cave and the tunnel, there is a small cavity: la Gatera Penjada de Secabecs, of very reduced dimensions and explored a short time later.

Speleothems

On entering to the right of the large room, there is a smaller one that is decorated with speleothems.

Progression

The upper entrance can be accessed by an easy climb aided by a chain in a precarious state (re-equipped with parabolts in January 2020).

History

The first news of the caves is given by the Penedès archaeologist Pere Giró, who visited them during the months of April-June 1959 while carrying out some first archaeological interventions (Revista Ampurias, 1962). In September 1974, Joan Virella with companions from the Agrupació Excursionista Talaia (Vilanova i la Geltrú) again carried out work inside the cavity.

The material collected, not too well documented, seems to present a chronology that goes from the Neolithic, Bronze, Iberian, Roman, medieval and up to the end of the modern era (18th century).
