Cau de les Dents

Petita cova d'interès arqueològic al Montgrí

Torroella de Montgrí • Baix Empordà10m2m

Small cave of archaeological interest in the Montgrí, on the W slope of Montplà, with remains of human bones and teeth documented in 1975.

Characteristics

Location

Located on the W slope of Montplà. To reach it, one can go from Santa Caterina or from the Castell del Montgrí along the path that runs through the Coll d'en Garrigàs and climbs toward the mola de Montplà. Once on the upper plateau, the path passes beside a rocky crest with good views toward the castle. From the crest, the trail takes a NE direction and in about 200 m we will take a subtle path in a NW direction that descends the W slope of Montplà and in about 150 m we will be at the base of some small cliffs, where we will find the mouth of the cavity.

Description

Morphology

Small cavity with a low ceiling that forces one to move along crouched. Initially one enters a chamber in a slight descent of about 4 m in diameter. At its E end a small conduit begins that ascends by means of steps up to the final stretch in a SE direction, where the conduit rises in a ramp and widens, but the ceiling height drops and forces one to enter it lying down.

Progression

Initially one enters a chamber in a slight descent. At its E end a small conduit begins that ascends by means of steps up to the final stretch in a SE direction, where the conduit rises in a ramp and widens, but the ceiling height drops and forces one to enter it lying down.

History

The first references that exist about the cavity are from a visit by members of the Centre d'Estudis del Montgrí in 1975, where they were able to document remains of bones and abundant human teeth.
