Characteristics

Location

From the football pitch in Torroella, take the old path of les Dunes and follow it for about 800 metres until reaching a fork to the left that leads to some field huts. From here, climb about 50 metres of elevation gain in the direction of the Montplà to the foot of a small cliff, where the cau de la Figuera lies well hidden. Continue upwards towards the Montplà, overcoming another 90 metres of elevation gain, until reaching another small cliff where the cau is found.

Description

Morphology

The entrance appears as a fissure in the rock that leads to a narrow gallery, slightly descending and about 5 metres long.

History

According to L. Pericot, during his first archaeological interventions in the Montgrí (1925), local people told him that towards the second half of the 19th century, a farmer named Margall, owner of an olive grove on the slope of the Montplà, took advantage of a fissure to remove soil for cultivation, and within this soil he had found rosary beads.

On 30 August 1925, Pericot located the cau and the excavations began, finding remains of inhumation, flint pieces and necklace pieces, being a burial cave of the late Neolithic and Chalcolithic. For years the site has been considered exhausted.
