Avenc Sargantana

Avenc de 30 metres de fondària a Tivissa

Tivissa • Ribera d'Ebre58m30m

A 30-metre-deep pit in Tivissa, with difficult access, located and explored by SIRE-Cornellà in 1965-66 and revisited in 1982 with GERP.

Characteristics

Location

The pit is located in Tivissa. Access is difficult: the track that leaves Tivissa and follows the camí de la Llena, shortly before reaching the mas de la Devesa, is closed by a padlock, with signs prohibiting passage for both vehicles and people. From behind the mas de la Devesa a path sets out that crosses a streambed and heads to the mas d'en Benito. From this mas one must climb across fields and old terraces to the serra Segrentana, which runs perpendicular to the serra de la Creu. The cavity is found at the foot of a marked gully located on the right-hand slope of the serra. The coordinates are approximate, based on a 1952 map at a scale of 1:50,000 with little reliability.

Description

Morphology

A collapse that occurred in the early 80s of the last century partially blocked the entrance, so one must look for a passage between the blocks to reach a short gallery that gives access to a large joint. Descending it, at -16.6 metres we find an inclined ledge with a small side chamber. At -30 metres we find the bottom of the cavity.

Progression

One must look for a passage between the blocks to reach a short gallery that gives access to a large joint, and descend it to the bottom.

Other details

Toponymy: it is assumed that the name of the cavity comes from the name of the serra, currently called Segrentana, but possibly in the old editions of the maps used by the explorers it appeared as Sargantana.

History

Located and explored by members of SIRE-Cornellà during the course of the three campaigns carried out during the years 1965-66. In 1982 they return again together with the GERP de Sant Just Desvern. About 30 metres below the entrance and in the same gully, we find the avenc del Rat Penat; it is very likely that it is the same cavity that in 1966 they named avenc Agustí; it is a small pit with some impassable cracks and 3 metres of passage in the direction of the nearby avenc Sargantana.
