Avenc de la Serra del Masiet

Cavitat inèdita a la serra del Masiet, Mont-ral.

Mont-ral • Alt Camp85m24m

Unprecedented cavity in the Serra del Masiet, Mont-ral, located by Pere Alegre and explored by Juli Serrano and Montse Roca (SIE-CEA).

Characteristics

Location

On the TV-7041 road in the direction of Alcover to Capafonts, 135 metres after passing kilometre 12 on the right of the road we find an entrance with a grate, this bars the way of the track that leads to a currently abandoned quarry.

Once we have reached the point situated furthest N of the quarry, a path comes out that will take us to the cavity; the route from the road is 2 kilometres if we pass through the upper part of the quarry, if we follow the track along the lower part of the quarry then the route is 425 metres longer.

Description

Morphology

The mouth is formed by a large fissure. From the N side of this and next to the path we descend a first shaft of 3.25 metres that places us on a floor about 3 metres long, the point where a shaft of a little more than 8 metres deep opens. Once at the base and in a NE direction the gallery descends in a ramp with a couple of drops, the first of which requires rigging, reaching the maximum depth of 23.8 metres.

Located again at the base of the shaft, if we continue in a S direction we will soon climb a small drop, entering a gallery with abundant stalactites; before reaching the end of the gallery on the right-hand side we find a narrow shaft about 3 metres deep that does not require equipment to descend. Once at the base we enter a chamber where on the left we find a small shaft of about 2 metres that leads to a diaclase that ends up becoming impenetrable. If we continue straight on the gallery climbs a little until reaching a point where we find an intersection of diaclases, both becoming impenetrable within a few metres. As for the height of the diaclase it cannot be measured, but given the existing air current it is very likely that it leads to the exterior.

History

Cavity located by Pere Alegre of the Refugi Musté Recasens de Mont-ral. In early 2021 he accompanied Juli Serrano (SIE-CEA) to the mouth of the cavity, who returned shortly afterwards together with Montse Roca (SIE-CEA) to carry out the exploration.
