Characteristics

Location

On the TV-7041 road heading from Alcover to Capafonts, 135 metres after passing kilometre 12, on the right-hand side of the road we find an entrance with a grate, which bars the way of the track leading to a currently abandoned quarry.

Once we have reached the northernmost point of the quarry, a path emerges that will take us to the avenc de la Serra del Masiet; at this point we must follow the fissure parallel in a southerly direction, and the descent soon begins along the left-hand slope of the barranc dels Esclots; after descending only the first few metres we will find the upper entrance of the cavity, and the lower entrance is about 7 metres further on.

The route from the road is 2 kilometres if we go via the upper part of the quarry; if we follow the track along the lower part of the quarry, then the route is 425 metres longer.

Description

Morphology

Cavity structured along a fissure running NE-SW, probably the southernmost continuation of the fissure that generated the avenc de la Serra del Masiet.

The upper entrance gives access to a pit of 7.25 metres; before reaching the base we find a block almost 2 metres high, which we descend on its north side. A short ramp places us at the deepest point of the cavity at -8.9 metres; the gallery climbs steeply for a couple of metres and ends 4 metres further on in a chaos of blocks. Standing again at the base of the entrance pit on the south side of the block, the gallery climbs a little and ends in a small chamber where, about 3 metres above in the ceiling, we find the lower entrance of the cavity.

History

Cavity located and explored in early 2021 by Juli Serrano and Montse Roca (SIE-CEA).
