Avenc del Barranc dels Esclots

Avenc del Barranc dels Esclots

Cavitat inèdita a la serra del Masiet, Mont-ral.

Mont-ral • Alt Camp76m17m

Unprecedented cavity in the Serra del Masiet, Mont-ral, located by Pere Alegre and explored by Juli Serrano and Montse Roca (SIE-CEA).

Characteristics

Location

On the TV-4071 road heading from Alcover to Capafonts, 135 metres after passing kilometre 12, on the right side of the road we find an entrance with a grate; this bars the way of the track that leads to a currently abandoned quarry.

Once we have reached the northernmost point of the quarry, a path emerges that will take us to the mouth of the avenc de la Serra del Masiet; the route from the road is 1.8 kilometres if we go through the upper part of the quarry; if we follow the track along the lower part of the quarry then the route is 425 metres longer.

From the avenc de la Serra del Masiet, once past it, the path turns right and passes right next to it above, then turns left and descends along the ridge for 150 metres until it crosses through the middle of the fissure that forms the avenc del Barranc dels Esclots.

Description

Morphology

The mouth is formed by a large fissure, through the middle of which passes a path that descends from Mont-ral towards the river Brugent; on the right side of the path (SE), a pit of just over 4 metres places us on a wide base; on the NW side the gallery descends until it becomes closed; at a higher level it continues until it emerges among blocks to the outside.

Progression

Once back at the base of the entrance pit we continue in a SW direction until we reach a fig tree that grows inside and that serves to rig the next pit of about 3 metres; at the base a ramp leads to the next pit of about 3 metres followed by another of 5 metres that places us at the bottom of the cavity at -17.5 metres depth.

History

Cavity located by Pere Alegre of the Refugi Musté Recasens de Mont-ral. In early 2021 he accompanied Juli Serrano (SIE-CEA) to the mouth of the cavity; the latter returned shortly afterwards together with Montse Roca (SIE-CEA) to carry out the exploration.
