Avenc Buidat

Avenc Buidat

Avenc d'11 metres de fondària a Sitges,(el Garraf).

Sitges • Garraf13m11m

An 11-metre-deep pit in Sitges (el Garraf), discovered in 1977 and extended by various diggings until 1999.

Characteristics

Location

The pit is located in Sitges, in el Garraf. From the car park at Pla de Querol we will head along the road to Pla d'en Pitxot, where the path marked with cairns begins and leads to the avenc dels Aragalls. After a descent of about 300 metres we reach a flat area where we find three Dwarf Fan Palms together 2 metres tall (data from 2010); from here we will continue across the flat area for about 250 metres. Here the terrain descends again; we will continue for about 80 metres, deviating slightly to the left, where we will find the cavity, directly opposite La Pleta, which can be seen on the other side of the torrent.

Description

Morphology

The triangular entrance leads to a circular 5-metre shaft; the base, short and on a steep slope, leads us to a three-metre shaft, where we find an accumulation of blocks. A slope leads us to a 2-metre crawlway where the cavity ends.

Speleothems

As it was deepened, flowstone and various formations appeared on the walls.

Progression

The triangular entrance leads to a circular 5-metre shaft; the base, short and on a steep slope, leads us to a three-metre shaft, where we find an accumulation of blocks. A slope leads us to a 2-metre crawlway where the cavity ends.

History

Discovered in 1977 by GEFOMA, the cavity was 1.5 metres deep, but there were indications that it continued and digging work began. In 1982 the now-defunct Centre Espeleològic Cervelló continued the digging with some of the cavers who had taken part in the previous digging. In 1999 it was the SIE del CE Àliga that resumed the digging with the participation of some of the cavers who had already taken part in the two previous diggings. A member of the SIRE-UEC del Prat de Llobregat also came to take part in the latest diggings.

It really was not a digging, but rather an emptying, since down to the current level all the material that completely filled the cavity had to be removed; as it was deepened, flowstone and various formations appeared on the walls, as well as the shafts of about 2 metres in diameter. The emptying was abandoned out of boredom, but if anyone is interested they can continue the task; the cavity has not bottomed out.
