Caves of El Pinell de Brai

El Pinell de Brai, a municipality in the Terra Alta, has 6 inventoried cavities: 5 caves and 1 pit. Together they total 65 m of passage and reach a maximum depth of 15 m. The recorded lithologies are Limestone in 5 cases and Conglomerate in 1.

The longest cavity is the Forat de Borretes, at 20 m, which is also the deepest, at 15 m. It is followed by the Cova de la Brigada Lincoln and the Cova de Riberola, both 12 m; the Cova de Riberola, however, is the second in depth with 7 m, ahead of the Cova de la Brigada Lincoln, at 4 m. The list is closed by the Balma de la Vall Closa and the Cova de la Vall Closa, 8 m each and with no vertical drop.

Several cavities are located in the Serra de Pàndols: the Forat de Borretes on the S slope, the Cova de la Brigada Lincoln on the cliff of the NE area of the Puntal de l'Os, opposite km 8.2 of the C-43 road from Pinell de Brai to Gandesa, and the Balma de la Vall Closa and the Cova de la Vall Closa in the Vall Closa, the latter on the right slope of the Barranc de la Vall Closa de Verano, west of km 8 of the same road. The Cova de Riberola is a large rock shelter with dry-stone constructions, 76 metres wide and 6 metres in maximum height.
