Description

Morphology

Main entrance 1.4 x 0.8 metres. Shaft of 12.3 metres from the lower lip and 13 metres from the upper, structured on two joints: a main one (E20N) and the other of the orthogonal system: N-S. Marl layer at -4.5, where a small shaft or tube coming from the secondary lateral entrance, 1.5 metres to the N of the main one and impenetrable, joins the main shaft. From here the shaft widens (about 2 metres in diameter) and at -8 joins a cavity developed to the N on the same E-W joint, whose terminal points follow the joint and end in two impenetrable crawls due to narrowness. The E end descends to the point of minimum depth (elevation -14).

History

Cavity known for many years by the monks of the monastery and by climbers, but we cannot fix a date of first exploration. The only written reference is from the exploration by the ERE-CEC on 9 May 1971, where they record previous visits.

In the book "Montserrat Pam a Pam" (Operació Montserrat) by Josep Barberà i Sauquè (Publicacions de l'Abadia de Montserrat, November 1977) on page 254 there is a small review of the pit, and they cite it as "Avenc de l'Agulla o Avenc d'en Barberà" and mention its supposed first exploration, carried out on 10-5-1971 by J. Monterde and Josep Barberà himself, while carrying out the Operació Montserrat. This date must be erroneous, since O. Escolà in his article says that at the bottom of the pit they found a tag from the "Operació Montserrat" dated 28-2-1971.
