Description
Morphology
La Tomba d'en Sitjar is an emblematic cavity of the Ripollès, in the municipality of Camprodon. With a depth of -54m, it is structured as an 18m shaft in the form of a beautiful and perfect ellipsoid, which ends in a ledge and continues into a ramp that, at -30m, brings us to the vertical that leads us down to the -54m level.
Progression
At present it is not possible to pass beyond the first ledge because of the enormous quantity of waste of all kinds that, from the -10m level, has been filling the cavity. From this level we make the descent leaning on the "wall" of compacted rubbish, and once at the base of the shaft we find ourselves in the very middle of the platform of rubble and waste that lets us glimpse the continuation towards the descending ramp.
History
The first mention of the cavity appears in the Catàlech (1897) by Font i Sagué, without giving data, and who together with Cèsar August Torras had been at the entrance on 23 September 1896, lamenting that they could not descend for lack of equipment. It also appears in the Recull (1908) by Faura i Sans. C.A. Torras in his work El Pirineu Català (1923) also mentions it, saying that it seems to be of great depth.
The first exploration appears to have been carried out by members of the Club Excursionista Pirenaic (Barcelona) with companions from its Ripoll delegation on 29 June 1956, making the complete exploration and the survey.
For years it had been used as a canyet and later also as a dumping ground for all kinds of waste. At some point the entrance was walled up with bricks, but later a hole was made to continue throwing rubbish in.
With the aim of raising awareness about the serious problem of contaminating dumping, the Department of Ecology and Protection of the Subterranean Environment of the Federació Catalana d'Espeleologia invited the federated Catalan clubs to the clean-up day of the pit, with the support of the Ajuntament de Camprodon, the mountain support group of the Agents Rurals, the ADF Catllar-Montgrony and Protecció Civil de Ripoll.
The action was carried out on 22 and 23 October 2011. Everyone made a great effort and they managed to extract approximately 200kgs of waste.
