la Dou del Bastareny

Surgència de 45 metres de recorregut a Gisclareny.

Gisclareny • Berguedà45m10m

A 45-metre-long spring resurgence in Gisclareny, with three entrances, galleries, unstable boulders and a sump; known since time immemorial and explored speleologically since 1965.

Characteristics

Location

By the track that from Bagà passes through Cal Cerdanyola, and shortly before reaching Cal Monnell there is a bridge that crosses the river; at this point the spring can already be sensed by the sight of a waterfall. A path parallel to this river must be followed up until reaching the spring.

Approximate coordinates without much reliability.

Description

Morphology

The spring consists of three entrances. Entrance 1, 1X1 metre, is located on the E side of the spring; triangular in shape, like the rest of the gallery, it gives access to a small step. Past this, the gallery descends in a gentle slope, with a good number of unstable boulders along the route, which is currently 25 metres, with a depth of -9 metres at the point of maximum immersion.

Entrance 2 is located in the central part of the spring; a narrow crawl allows access for about 2 metres, from where about 10-12 metres are sounded, but the instability of two large boulders prevents progress.

Entrance 3 consists of a vertical passage of 0.30X0.40 metres after carrying out a considerable dig. The small shaft of about 10 metres depth, in its middle half forms a small chamber between boulders, further down it gains dimensions considerably (6X5 metres). At the other end of the chamber (8-9 metres) and in its upper part, a possible window can be seen.

They do not appear to have a direct connection between the three entrances at this level; the sum of the three accesses gives 45 metres of development.

Hydrology

The base of the chamber of entrance 3 is totally occupied by a sump, preventing one from standing in it. The sounding of the sump carried out with the same rope of the rig was calculated at -7 metres.

Progression

Entrance 1 gives access to a small step; past this the gallery descends in a gentle slope. Entrance 2: a narrow crawl allows access for about 2 metres, from where about 10-12 metres are sounded, but the instability of two large boulders prevents progress. Entrance 3: a vertical passage of 0.30X0.40 metres after carrying out a considerable dig.

History

Spring known since time immemorial; according to accounts, people from the area during a drought that occurred in the year 1952 ventured inside for about 15 metres. Speleologically, it seems there was an exploration attempt in 1965 by the GEB.

Between 1986 and 1989, it is dug and explored by SIES-L'Avenç, who made a sketch of the spring.

In August 2016 Joel Borrazás (GEB) made a new visit to the spring; he returned on the first of September accompanied by Carles Ramoneda, who carried out a new dig and a dive, reaching -9 metres depth and making the survey. Joel Borrazás returned on 5 September 2016 with some 6-litre bottles, but these are too bulky to be able to pass.

Toponymy: We have chosen to name the cavity la Dou del Bastareny, which seems the most correct and usual form, since the toponym dou seems a synonym of spring (a form between deu and fou). We reject the forms adou and even more adour that we have sometimes seen written.
