Interessant surgència a la riera de Beget

Camprodon • Ripollès58m5m

Temporary spring on the riera de Beget, with a mouth 1 metre by 0.45 metres and access through a mouth 0.70 by 0.42 metres. Narrow galleries, formations and a solitary stalagmite. Known since time immemorial and surveyed in 2017.

Characteristics

Location

Coming from Camprodon, before Molló, follow the GIV-5223 road. We will park the car in the car park at the entrance to the village of Beget. We will cross Beget to find a signposted path that, on the left, climbs towards La Menera. At the third bend, on the left, a small path through the woods will bring us on a short walk to the torrent that flows out of the spring. This cave is at the foot of the cliff and above the riera de Beget.

Description

Morphology

The temporary spring has a mouth 1 metre wide and 0.45 metres high, choked with gravel; to enter it we would have to clear it. Access to the cavity is through a tiny mouth located 0.60 metres above the spring. The narrow mouth is 0.70 metres wide by 0.42 metres high. This first crawl is about 2 metres long. Once past it, we find a small chamber where, following the direction of the entrance gallery, we find an r+0.70 and a small passage that ends after a metre and a half. The continuation is found on the right with an r-1.20; we descend this and find ourselves in a gallery heading E, which will be the predominant direction of the cavity at the foot of the first cliff. At the step, we see on our right and in the direction of the spring we mentioned at the beginning, a small gallery that is choked with sediments and is not passable. We will continue for about ten metres along this gallery, of irregular shapes, strongly eroded by the floods of this temporary spring. The dimensions do not exceed 0.90 metres in height and 0.70 in width. Next we reach an r-0.60, and once down it we again find a gallery on the right, in the direction of the spring, with dimensions of 1.30 metres wide and 0.30 metres high. Despite having removed some pebbles in order to advance, after a few metres we have to give up, as the distance to the ceiling decreases, although its meagre continuation is visible. We will continue along the main gallery for about fifteen metres, passing a crawling narrow passage and reaching what at first could have been the end point of the cavity. This is a passage which, after several trips and a little clearing, the two explorers of the team managed to pass: Montse and Emília. The new gallery is easy to traverse, 5 metres long, and we reach a flowstone where we find a hole in the ceiling that leads us to another gallery, the widest in the cave, 6 metres long, 2×2 metres in section and with a solitary stalagmite in its very middle. We will still progress a few metres along a ramp of mud and precarious blocks that support the ceiling. Although it would be possible to continue advancing with clearing, it is not very advisable due to its dangerousness.

Speleothems

Observing some formations. A solitary stalagmite in the very middle of the widest gallery of the cave.

Hydrology

It is thought that the origin of the waters discharged by the deus de Beget could come from the area of Prats de Molló and la Menera (Vallespir, Northern Catalonia), since when it rains intensely in this sector is when the springs of Beget become active.

History

A group of springs known since time immemorial. They are already mentioned as impenetrable springs by the colleague Oleguer Escolà, who visited them in 1969 (SIS -5; Arxiu CET nº 11, any 1977). Around 1993 they began to be partially explored by members of the Centre Excursionista d'Olot, abandoning progression through the narrowness of the passages. In 2015-2016, members of the EC Gràcia and GE Badalona made different trips that were frustrated by being unable to overcome the interior narrowness or by the presence of stagnant water. It is not until 2017 that the narrowness could be overcome and the complete survey carried out by members of the GE Badalona and CE de Castellar del Vallès.
