Petita cova ascendent a Sant Bartomeu del Grau

Sant Bartomeu del Grau • Osona13m12m

Small ascending cave in Sant Bartomeu del Grau, at the foot of a crag, with a fine 4 m climb and a steep ramp.

Characteristics

Location

At the foot of a small crag located about half a kilometre south of Sant Bartomeu del Grau and some 150 m from the Rocanegra farmhouse, also to the south. A hundred metres before reaching Sant Bartomeu (coming from Vic), a track marked with yellow and white paint leaves the road on the left. We follow it for about 5 minutes, when the track passes very close to the crag, along its upper part. The cave is almost below us, but to reach the foot of the crag we must take a secondary track that leaves on the left and after a hundred metres we leave it, taking a not very worn path that passes beside the cavity.

Description

Morphology

The entrance is a good size, of vertical configuration. The cave begins with a fine climb of 4 m of vertical drop (IIIº). Once the climb is overcome, a steep ascending ramp (32º) continues that will lead us to the end of the cavity. The gallery is of good dimensions, with heights exceeding 5 m. In the final stretch it widens a little and widths on the order of 4 metres are reached.

Speleothems

The whole cave presents bare rock, with no notable sediments. Even so, we can still find remains of very eroded old concretions.

Progression

It is advisable to bring a rope, as it will be useful at least when making the descent.

History

The place name of the cavity appears labelled on the ICGC map and, as it does not appear in any speleological catalogue, it aroused the curiosity of members of ECM Barcelonès and GE Badalona, who on 23-3-2023 were able to locate it but could not explore it, since the cave begins with a fine climb of 4 metres. Although the wall to be overcome is not entirely vertical, there are no good holds to grab, so they decided to return another day with a rope, which would surely be very useful to them, at least on the descent.

They returned on 8-4-2023. Although the wall to be overcome is not very difficult for anyone who is a “handy” climber (it is possibly a IIIº), when one reaches a certain age one is not up for doing many acrobatics, and wanting to make sure of the move they brought a small aluminium ladder of 4 rungs in order to help overcome the most vertical part of the wall. And that was how they managed to complete the exploration.
