Characteristics

Location

From the LV-4241b road from Solsona to Coll de Jou, shortly after passing kilometre 18, we will leave the vehicle in a clearing located on the right of the road, and on the left side of the road we will take the path heading towards the house of Encies; on reaching a junction we will keep left, the track passes through the middle of the forest, then we will find a junction where we will keep right, further on we will pass a cattle grid and a new junction where we will keep right. After passing a very tight bend, with a wall on one side and a cliff on the other, we will go down until we reach a torrent where we will find the font de l'Algassa; if we continued up the forest track, we would reach the ruins of the house of l'Algassa. We will go down through the middle of the torrent, or along the left slope where we will find a small, quite overgrown path but marked by the passing of cattle, and before reaching the cliff we will follow an abandoned path along the left slope, without losing height, and in two minutes we will reach the cliff. Enjoying a splendid view over the Rasa de Canalda, with a spectacular waterfall when it rains heavily. From this point we will leave the abandoned path that would take us down almost to the Rasa de Canalda, but it is very overgrown with brambles and fallen pines, so we will continue above along a small path in a S direction, and without losing much height, in about two minutes it will bring us to the rock shelter. Approximate coordinates to be reviewed and without much precision.

Description

Morphology

It is a large rock shelter with a frontal opening of 30x8 metres and about 14 metres deep.

Speleothems

It has had an abundant lithogenic process, coming to form an inner cave with flowstone and columns, giving the whole an air of great beauty. We can observe that the stalactites on the outer side are inclined outwards, due to the existing air current, which causes the water drops to shift in that direction as the stalactite forms.

History

This interesting rock shelter seems to have been known since ancient times by the people of the area. The first data about this cavity from the speleological point of view were published in 1998 by Salvador Codina of the CE Solsonès, although he explored them in August 1996.
