Grans balmes troglodítiques prop de Solduga, (Baix Pallars)

Baix Pallars • Pallars Sobirà30m0

Large troglodytic rock shelters near Solduga, in Baix Pallars, with two main openings, livestock buildings and the Romanesque church of Santa Coloma.

Characteristics

Location

On the N-260 road from Pobla de Segur to Sort, once past the last tunnel of the Collegats gorge, at 2.5 kilometres we will find the turn-off towards Baén; then a bridge crosses the Noguera Pallaresa river and, once past it, one must take a track on the right that crosses the Major river by a ford and climbs up towards the Pentina woods, winding its way up the mountain. At kilometre 4.6 from the start of the track one reaches a very pronounced bend and above it, half hidden by the woods, a large vertical chasm is visible in the wall, crowned by a rock bridge: the Salt de la Núvia, possibly an ancient pit that, through the degradation of the cliff, has lost one whole side and curiously has kept its entire entrance, which remains hanging in the form of a bridge. Obviously the name comes from a legend, widespread in different regions of Catalonia, in which a maiden prefers to throw herself off rather than marry the man (usually old, but rich) whom her family forces on her. A few metres further on from the aforementioned bend, the signposted path leading to the Espluga de Cuberes and Solduga branches off to the right.

Description

Morphology

Gigantic rock shelter open along the cliff. It has two main openings, both with buildings, and they are currently used to keep flocks of sheep and goats. At the end of the more easterly one is the small Romanesque church of Santa Coloma.

History

Large rock shelter known since time immemorial and of little speleological interest. These rock shelters were probably already inhabited since prehistory and there is evidence of a forge in the year 923. Human presence is documented up to the period of the Civil War (1936-39).
