Cova Pintada

Cova Pintada

Gran i coneguda balma al massís del Port (Baix Ebre)

Roquetes • Baix Ebre20m0

Large and well-known rock shelter in the Port massif (Baix Ebre), with ancient lithogenic deposits and limited speleological interest.

Characteristics

Location

In the Port massif (Baix Ebre). From Mas de Barberans you must go to find the paved track of Lloret and follow it to the end where there is a space to park the cars. Take the dirt track that soon becomes a path and a small wooden bridge appears that crosses the barranc de Lloret. From here you must follow the path on the right that climbs up the barranc de Cova Pintada and reach the spectacular salt de Cova Pintada (even more spectacular when water flows). At the foot of this waterfall is the cave that gives its name to the whole spot. Above it are the important pits CP.1; CP.3; ... explored by the Espeleo Club Tortosa. Approximate coordinates.

Description

Morphology

It is one of the many large rock shelters known in the Port massif. We do not know the specific dimensions due to the lack of a survey of the cavity (see photos), although Bayerri (1934) collects information from 1902 and says that it presents about 22 metres in width, 10 in height and a depth of 10 metres.

Speleothems

The entire cavity preserves important very ancient lithogenic deposits, not very well preserved.

Other details

The speleological interest itself is limited.

History

Known since time immemorial. The old catalogues, Font (1897); Faura (1909); Ferraté (1918), cite a Cova Pintada and place it in the area of Paüls – Alfara. Bayerri (1934) argues that the different citations refer to a single cavity that must be the one he describes and that had been excavated by Dr. Bosch i Gimpera. In this work he accompanies a photograph of the cave with a group of excursionists from Tortosa in the year 1904 and singing Els Segadors.
