Avenc Cp.1

Important avenc de 195 metres de desnivell al sector de Cova Pintada (el Port)

Roquetes • Baix Ebre675m195m

A 195-metre-deep pit in the Cova Pintada sector (el Port), with an entrance leading to subhorizontal passages, chambers and shafts down to the -179.5 level.

Characteristics

Location

On the left slope of the barranc de Cova Pintada, above this cavity, at the very foot of a cliff of one of the channels that feed the barranc. Near kilometre 18 of the road from Roquetes to Mas de Barberans (TV-3421) a track sets off up the barranc de Lloret. Shortly after passing the mas de Manuel, leave the vehicle and go up the barranc de Cova Pintada. Once at this grand rock shelter, located at the foot of a waterfall of the barranc, which must be climbed on the right until reaching the upper part, where we overcome a rocky spur on the other side of which there is a very steep channel tributary to the barranc. The cavity is near the foot of a cliff, on the right hydrographic slope of the tributary channel; climb up a scree slope which, although small, its visibility can help in locating it.

Description

Morphology

The entrance is one metre in diameter, giving way to a set of interwoven subhorizontal passages until reaching the Sala Gran (-40 level), more than 20 metres in diameter. Returning to the Sala Gran, a step and two small shafts allow us to reach a 23-metre drop that places us in the Sala de l'Aeri. After overcoming some further steps and a 6.5-metre shaft we find ourselves in a sloping gallery where two narrow sections must be passed until reaching the very narrow entrance of a 10.5-metre shaft. Two more drops place us in the Sala Hilti, at one end of which we find the maximum depth (-179.5 level). Total depth: 195 m. (+16; -179).

Speleothems

At the base of the 10.5-metre shaft we find the Cascada Blanca, a formation of great beauty.

Hydrology

Starting from the Sala Gran, and by means of a ledge, one can reach the lake and the ascending routes, which place us at the +16 level above the entrance.

History

In 1985, the shepherd Cesáreo told members of the Espeleo Club Tortosa about the existence of a cavity located in the Solà de l'Avenc, higher up than Cova Pintada (he was referring to what would later be the Avenc CP.3 or Avenc del Mort). During the prospecting to locate it they discovered the entrance of the Avenc CP.1, which became the main objective. That same year they reached the -125 level, stopping before a narrow section with an air current. It was not until 1987 that they reached the bottom of the pit, after carrying out digs at -125, -132 and -137.
