Capafonts • Baix Camp19m2m

A 19-metre-long cave in the barranc de la Pixera, in Capafonts, with two entrances divided by a rock column.

Characteristics

Location

Leaving the village of Capafonts along the TV-7041 road towards Mont-ral, at kilometre 21.22 a track leaves to the right; after a few metres we find a path on the left with a sign for la Foradada. Follow it and, on a steep slope, climb without losing the way up to la Foradada. Once past it, the path continues climbing until a turn-off to the right is found; we continue climbing until reaching the base of a cliff where all the caves and the spring known as Escudelleta are found. Cave no. 7 is 52 metres after cave no. 8 and 25 metres before reaching cave no. 6.

Description

Morphology

The cave entrance is large and has two openings divided by a rock column. The total route through both accesses is 19 metres.

Other details

Cave no. 7 has a very peculiar feature: at the mouth there is a rock column that divides the two openings.

History

Despite being known since distant times by the people of the area, the first mention we find is due to J. Ferraté (1918), who mentions the group of caves, calling them Coves de l'Escudelleta.

J. Iglésies and J. Santasusagna (1930), in their hiking guide to the Muntanyes de Prades, also mention them, but specify that the most important of all of them is the one called Cova del Grèvol.

In 1968 and 1969, members of the Grup Geogràfic de Gràcia (later EC de Gràcia) visit the cova del Grèvol, calling it Cova de l'Escudelleta.

In 1981 and 1982, members of the SIEP – CE Poblet de Barcelona carry out a compilation work of the whole set of cavities and number them (1 to 10), but call them del Barranc de la Pixera, although it would have been more correct to call them Coves de l'Escudelleta.
