Characteristics

Location

Leaving the village of Capafonts by the TV-7041 road towards Mont-ral, at kilometre 21.22 on the right a track branches off; after a few metres we find on the left a path with a sign for la Foradada. Follow it and, on a steep slope, climb without losing the way up to la Foradada. Once past it, the path continues climbing until a fork to the right is found; we continue climbing until reaching the base of a cliff where all the caves and the spring known as Escudelleta are found. Number 10 is the first of the caves we come across, very visible because its entrance hangs on the cliff. To access by the upper entrance, follow the path passing in front of all the caves of l'Escudelleta; the path gradually widens until it becomes a track in very bad condition; soon we reach a crossroads where we continue to the left for 830 metres; at this point we leave the track and continue in a W direction towards the cliff across country for 160 metres, where we find the upper entrance that gives access to the cave of l'Escudelleta no. 10.

Another way to access is by 4x4 vehicle from the coll de Capafonts on the TV-7041 road and follow the pista dels Motllats which passes by the Creu Trencada, the font Nova up to the Tossal del Baptistó. It should be noted that circulation on this track is prohibited and therefore there is a risk of being sanctioned by the rural agents.

Description

Morphology

The cave has two entrances hanging on the cliff, but on the upper part of it there is a round hole about 10 m in diameter and on one side the 5 m of drop can easily be descended. At its bottom, in the SW end of the plan, the two entrances that plunge down the cliff open.

Progression

To access by the upper entrance, follow the path passing in front of all the caves of l'Escudelleta; the path gradually widens until it becomes a track in very bad condition; soon we reach a crossroads where we continue to the left for 830 metres; at this point we leave the track and continue in a W direction towards the cliff across country for 160 metres, where we find the upper entrance that gives access to the cave of l'Escudelleta no. 10. It should be noted that circulation on this track is prohibited and therefore there is a risk of being sanctioned by the rural agents.

History

Despite being known since distant times by the people of the area, the first mention we find is due to J. Ferraté (1918), who mentions the group of caves, calling them Coves de l'Escudelleta. J. Iglésies and J. Santasusagna (1930) in their hiking guide to the Muntanyes de Prades also mention them, but specify that the most important of all of them is the one called Cova del Grèvol. In 1968 and 1969, members of the Grup Geogràfic de Gràcia (later EC de Gràcia) visit the cova del Grèvol, calling it Cova de l'Escudelleta. In 1981 and 1982, members of the SIEP – CE Poblet de Barcelona carry out a compilation work of all the cavities and number them (1 to 10) but call them del Barranc de la Pixera, although it would have been more correct to call them Coves de l'Escudelleta. As for cave number 10, we have no record of its exploration until 2-10-2022, when it is visited by Josep Guarro, Joan C. Juderias and Jordi Perera.
