Characteristics

Location

Leaving Sadernes, we cross the Pont d'en Valentí and go up along a path until we find the new track that climbs to La Quera, we return to the path until we reach the ruined house of La Quera, we must follow the GR for a little while and soon we take a path on the left that climbs to a spectacular viewpoint over a cliff, where a fantastic landscape of the Bassegoda can be seen and, below us with a free fall, the valley of Sant Aniol. We continue to near the coll Joell and we will continue downhill to Can Barrufa, from there we will continue uphill until we find the pas del Gamarús, which is a small vertical traverse equipped with chains. We continue along trails until we find a junction on the right that climbs a little until we reach below the cliff, a small scramble is needed to reach the cova dels Trabucaires; when descending it is easier and safer to pass a handline of about 20 metres through some parabolts fixed in the rock to descend to the base of the wall.

It is a long walk of about 16 kilometres round trip.

Description

Morphology

Cave with a large porch followed by a short gallery of about fifteen metres which gradually diminishes until it closes.

We do not have a survey, so we do not know the exact dimensions of the cavity.

History

The first mention we know of this cave is when it appears in the list of cavities that accompanies the map La Garrotxa by Editorial Alpina (1973), made by members of the ERE-CEC with the collaboration of colleagues from the Centre Excursionista d'Olot.

Its history and legend are related to the bands of bandits that roamed these mountains during the Carlist wars, as with other nearby cavities: Cova d'en Massot, Tuta dels Morts, etc., and which are referenced, without a name, in the famous novel La Punyalada, by the Olot-born Marià Vayreda.

It is said that this cave was the main den of a group of bandits who operated on both sides of the border with France and who had another hiding place in Ceret, very close to the border line, which is also known as Cova dels Trabucaires. It must be said, however, that the distance between the two caves is considerable.
