Characteristics

Location

From the side of the Information Centre of the Natural Park at Coll d'Estenalles (the road from Terrassa to Mura), a service track of the Park leads up towards Coll d'Eres. From this point you must follow the path (all well signposted) that goes into the Canal de Llor and brings you to the foot of most of the cavities in the area. The cova del Triangle is the first one encountered of the Cova Simanya cave system.

Description

Morphology

An entrance 7 by 2.5 metres through which one enters a straight gallery 38 metres long that gradually decreases in section until a narrow passage, later cleared, which two metres further on meets a gallery that cuts the main one perpendicularly. Continuing to the right, past some gours, a twist and crawling through a small gallery, almost filled up with clay, one reaches the final part of the large Cova Simanya, although the passage is obstructed by a stalagmitic crust that is difficult to clear and that allows no more than holding hands from one cave to the other.

Returning to the crossing and continuing to the left through a narrow and long passage, with a small change of direction that makes the passage of the feet difficult, one reaches a gallery of regular forms that gradually increases in height only to decrease again until it is filled up by sediments. But to the right there is a narrow passage that leads us to a level of (it seems) the same gallery, which within a few metres is cut almost perpendicularly by another of equal or similar orientation to the main one and 2.5 metres further on changes orientation again.

From here almost to the end, the floor is made up of sand and small pebbles. Finally, after 4 metres the gallery will change direction again to take the same one as the main entrance gallery and after a narrow stretch, the gallery becomes high and wide for some 14 metres, where the conduit becomes low and ends filled up with sediments, blocks and clay.

Speleothems

The passage that communicates with the large Cova Simanya is obstructed by a stalagmitic crust that is difficult to clear.

Hydrology

An ancient spring of the same Cova Simanya system and in an advanced state of fossilization.

Progression

After the entrance 7 by 2.5 metres one follows a straight gallery 38 metres long that decreases in section until a narrow passage, cleared later, which two metres further on meets a gallery perpendicular to the main one. Continuing to the right, past some gours, a twist and crawling through a small gallery almost filled up with clay, one reaches the final part of the large Cova Simanya, where the passage is obstructed by a stalagmitic crust that only allows holding hands from one cave to the other. Returning to the crossing and continuing to the left through a narrow and long passage, with a small change of direction that makes the passage of the feet difficult, one reaches a gallery of regular forms; to the right there is a narrow passage that leads to a level of the same gallery, cut almost perpendicularly by another of similar orientation to the main one, and 2.5 metres further on it changes orientation again. Finally, after 4 metres the gallery changes direction to take the same one as the main entrance gallery and, after a narrow stretch, becomes high and wide for some 14 metres.

History

We do not know who made the first exploration of this cavity or when. We have data that in February 1950 it had already been visited by members of the GES – CMB (as recorded in the GES activities book), although in the Sant Llorenç del Munt catalogue (F. Termens, 1951) it is not cited, neither as Cova del Triangle nor as Cova Seca. This last name seems to have been the one given to it initially, but it has always been better known by the other one.

For many years only the first 40 metres of gallery were known, which ended in a very narrow passage, through which it was sensed it might communicate with the Cova Simanya. But it is not until 1976 that members of the ERE – CEC had the determination to force that passage, which they achieved after five Sundays of difficult clearing, confirming the union, although not passable, with the Cova Simanya and the discovery of a new gallery, all of which increased the development of the cavity by more than 80 metres.

Note provided by Lluís Muntan (November 2016): We gave it the name "Triangle" (Carles Ribó, Josep Manuel Garcia and Lluís Muntan of the Gimnàs Blume) because of the shape of its entrance and because it was not indicated on the Alpina map. It was a year before I became a member of the CMB. We made this exploration on 24 September 1951 with the aim of hunting Speophilus.
